Birthdays Galore!

December is already upon us for my friends living there in Asia. That means two of my fellow Sagittarius friends are celebrating birthdays on December 1. Two more Sagi friends who are from the Philippines are also celebrating birthdays the following day on December 2.

Caroline May Ling who I met through common Twitter friends a few months back, is one of those celebrating a birthday. She's a real sweet, young blogger friend who lives in Malaysia. Her blog is nearly about her personal experiences, and she loves to post pics of herself which I can't blame this beautiful blogging friend for doing. Happy birthday Caroline!

Foong is another friend I met from my other friends on Twitter celebrating a birthday on the same day as Caroline. You can tell he gets around pretty well where he's at. He clearly states on his blog that he writes about anything. That he does, and he promotes interaction with contests, too. Another nice blogging friend to have. Happy birthday Foong!

On December 2, Czaroma Roman celebrates her birthday. Though we don't cross paths very much due to our own schedules, she's done very well for herself in terms of blogging. She writes about her personal life, but has been featured countless times in magazines from anything to do with parenting and children. She's won plenty of her share of contests, too. But once you read some of her entries, it's clear she's a genuinely sweet person who I've never seen say anything negative about anyone. Oh, she's beautiful inside and out with equally adorable kids, too. Happy birthday Czaroma!

Also tomorrow, Bingkee, who most of you know writes on I Love/Hate America, is celebrating a birthday on the same day as Czaroma. Bingkee writes very educated views about what she likes and dislikes about our country here in America. She is currently in the Philippines(where she's from) going to school for nursing. Don't let the title fool you, she's another kind person that expresses her clear opinion on matters. And, she's always good about replying back to you if you comment on her blog. Happy birthday my friend!

Note: The following is NOT to be taken seriously.
Recently, I was asked which of these people should be featured in the once a year Sagittarius World magazine. I told my editors that I wasn't going to make that decision for their December 1 deadline. So at the last minute, it was decided to put all four of them on the cover. Here's the cover:

Caroline is on the top left, Foong is on the top right, Czaroma(with her kids) is on the bottom left, and Bingkee is on the bottom right.

Get your magazine copies now to know more about these bloggers and other fellow Sagis that write on blogs. Sagis rock! Other Astrological Sign magazines should be in the works for those wondering.

Seriously though, I posted all these birthdays in one entry with the magazine cover for a couple of reasons. I wanted to post one pic on here with all four bloggers in it, but couldn't fit them all on some of the signs I wanted to post. So I went with featuring them all in a magazine-style pic since I COULD get them on here without the pic cutting any of them out. Most importantly, I don't usually make more than one post a day. Tomorrow is when I announce the winners of my Birthday Vacation Contest and First Commenter Scoreboard winners, too. So that's why I combined all their birthdays into one entry. Be sure to come back tomorrow to see the winners! Thanks for viewing, and Happy birthday again to Caroline, Foong, Czaroma, and Bingkee! You can be so kind to stop by their blogs and wish them happy birthday, too!

First Army-Navy Game on November 29, 1890

On November 29, 1890, one of the greatest rivalries in the history of sports was born. It was on this day that the first Army-Navy college football game took place at West Point, New York. This was the beginning of what many say is the greatest rivalry in American sports history.

The main person responsible for the start of the Army-Navy annual game was Dennis Mahan Michie. Michie, a West Point native who entered their university in 1888, learned the game of American football at Lawrenceville Prep. He had to have some help to convince United States Military Academy to issue a challenge to the Midshipmen at Navy. They agreed to his request on the condition that the game be played on their field at West Point.

In order to ensure that the game was played, Army helped to pay for Navy's traveling expenses as over 270 Cadets contributed 52 cents each which covered half of the money needed for the trip. The game itself didn't go like planned for Army though.

Navy had established a football program in 1879, but didn't have teams in 1880-81. Up to that point in their history, they had a career record of 15-12-2.

Meanwhile, Army began their program after the persuasion of Michie in 1890 with their first game against their future rival. Only two players on the Army team, Michie and Cadet Leonard Price, had played any football before. Army's inexperience would play a big role in the outcome of their first meeting with Navy in West Point.

At that time, the brutal flying wedge play that was known to cause serious physical damage and even deaths on the football field was a common play in the game. Such a play was a huge factor in this 1890 game as Army's Kirby Walker had been knocked out four times. The last time resulted in him being carried off the field to the hospital after not waking up from unconsciousness.

Fights did break out in the game, but the result wasn't a surprise to historians that were on hand.

During the game, Navy scored a touchdown on a fake punt in which Army clearly wasn't prepared for. In fact, Army protested the play to the officials not knowing the fake punt was a legal call for a team to make. Navy had come to West Point to beat the debuting Army football team 24-0. The game was one-sided, and Michie wasn't pleased with it at all.

The very next year, Army traveled to Maryland to play Navy with the result of the game being clearly different than their initial meeting. Army won 32-16 with help of a score from Michie in Annapolis, Maryland to even the series at one a piece. Navy would win the next two games in 1892 and 1893.

Unfortunately for Michie, he later died in the Spanish-American War in 1898 at the young age of 28 in the Battle of San Juan Hill. But he was the first head coach at Army and the major reason the rivalry between the two schools on the football field began. Michie Stadium was named after him in his honor.

From 1894 to 1898, the two teams did not meet on the football field. This was because of an incident at the end of the 1893 game between a Rear Admiral and Brigadier General. A meeting in 1894 took place involved then-U.S. President Grover Cleveland. The Secretary of the Navy Hilary A. Herbert and Secretary of War Daniel S. Lamont had agreed to restrict both programs from playing road games against other football schools. So this prevented the two schools from playing one another.

The series resumed in 1899 as the two teams played on a neutral site for the first time ever. Since Philadelphia was a good midway point and draw for fan attendance, they agreed to play that game at Franklin Field. Army won that game 17-5, and they would play the game at the same field in the next eight of nine contests(the 1905 game took place at Osborne Field in Princeton, New Jersey).

In 1909, Army canceled the remaining games on their schedule after the death of Cadet Eugene Byrne in a contest against Harvard on the flying wedge play. The number of deaths as a result of the flying wedge play forced President Teddy Roosevelt to get involved. The game resumed in 1910 and has been played every year with the exception of both academies being involved in World War I in 1917-18 and 1928-29 after disputes due to player eligibility.

Over the years, the game between the two teams have been played at various venues across the country including the Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium in New York as well as Soldier Field in Chicago and Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. In recent years, they've the game in East Rutherford and in Baltimore, too. However, Philadelphia has hosted the game 81 times in their history with games at Franklin Field, Veterans Stadium, and now Lincoln Financial Field beginning in 2003. John F. Kennedy Stadium hosted the most games in the series though.

In 1926, the game was held in Chicago at Soldier Field in honor of all American serviceman that fought in World War I. Over 100,000 fans watched the two teams battle to a memorable 21-21 tie. Army had only one loss on the year while Navy was unbeaten. Navy was awarded the National Championship.

In 1944-45, the two teams squared in the only match-ups in the series where both were ranked 1-2 in the polls. Army won both games against Navy, and won the National Championship during the 1944-45 seasons. Heisman Trophy winners emerged for the first time at West Point as Doc Blanchard won the award in 1945 and Glenn Davis took it home in 1946. Currently, 1945 would be the last time either program won a National Championship despite Pete Hawkins winning the Heisman Trophy in 1958.

Army had dominated the series until Navy pulled off one of the greatest upsets in college football history in 1950 knocking off the Cadets 14-2. Army has not been quite the same program since that time.

In the 1960s, Navy's Joe Bellino and Roger Staubach won the Heisman Trophy awards in 1960 and 1963, respectively. The 1963 game between was the first to use instant replay during games.

Staubach was the most notable of the Heisman Trophy winners between the two as he later starred for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL in 1970s winning two Super Bowls. He became the first player in history to win a Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl MVP in a career.

In 1983, the schools played at the Rose Bowl to accommodate the many serviceman and women that were living and/or retired on the West Coast. Navy won in lopsided game 42-13.

Other legendary players that played in this historic rivalry include future President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower and General of the Army Omar Bradley(Eisenhower and Bradley were teammates for Army in 1912).

The rivalry itself has taken on more significance over the years as players on both sides seldom if ever go onto professional football careers. This is especially true during wartime because this is the last game they play before being deployed in which it's possible they never will return to the United States.

At the end of each game, the winner is given the Thomson Cup named after the person who donated it: Robert M. Thomson. Also, both alma mater songs are played at the end of the game. The winning and losing teams exchange facing each other's students as a show of respect and solidarity amongst the programs.

Navy has won five straight games between the two teams, and leads the all-time series 54-49-7.

I personally had the privilege of attending the 2008 game between the two schools at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Navy did dominate the game by winning 34-0. The pregame was what stood out as paratroopers jumped out of helicopters directly above the field. They dropped in on the 50-yard line much to the delight of the capacity crowd. I was 21 rows from the field and sat in the same section that then-President George W. Bush came out of before the game. The pregame alone is worth it if you can go.

For those interested, the two teams play on December 11 in Philadelphia and it will be a nationally televised game on CBS, too. I know I'll go to see their classic rivalry in person again in the near future.

It transcended the game of college football and there is no other rivalry in sports like it. Every game and sport has a beginning. The rivalry between Army and Navy began in 1890 and it has forever become one of America's popular sports rivalries ever.

Thanks for viewing and I hope you enjoyed this classic sports flashback!

Contest and First Commenter Scoreboard Announcements!

First off, I want to thank everyone who has participated in the Birthday Vacation Contest Giveaway. It has taken off better than I thought it would.

However, I do have three people that have answered all questions correctly. Also, I'm going to award one more winner, and I'll explain that in the coming entry, too. This person will receive a third place prize, too. I'm going to announce the winners on the first day of December during U.S. time. So those living outside the U.S. can check out the winners early on December 2. I've been planning my trip and it will be very busy, yet fun time. For that reason, I've decided to announce the winners early since I do have three of them. I'm not going to be online much during my vacation, and don't want to wait until I get back to announce the winners. It would be different if no one answered them correctly, but that isn't the case.

I know I originally had the contest ending on December 4, but I'm going to attempt to make that up to those that still want to get in on it. Those that haven't participated in attempting to answer all questions will be linked in that entry that is coming on December 1. It doesn't matter if you answered all the questions correctly or not - you'll be linked for participating provided you answer three of the five questions correctly. Those that have already participated aren't required to answer three of five correctly, and will automatically be linked. Be sure you participate by November 30 at 11:59pm USA time and December 1 at 12:59pm Philippines/Malaysia time if you haven't done so. This prevents those just throwing down answers to get linked when others have worked to answer them.

First Commenter Scoreboard Announcement
First Commenter Club

On that same entry where I'll announce the First Commenter Scoreboard winners, too. If you read the Basic Bloganomics Changes entry, you'll notice the prize structure on there. You can see the leaders as of November 26 on here.

Stay tuned on December 1st to see if you won the contest, and see the FCSB winners for November as well. And all participants will be linked regardless if you were a winner in the contest or not. I hope you like the style of entry I plan on posting, too.

NOTE: All comments for entries up until that December 1st entry that is coming will still be moderated for obvious reasons. I hope everyone understands why I changed the rules, and thanks again to all who have/are participating!

Birthday Vacation Contest Giveaway!

As some of you know that have followed me on Twitter, I'm going to have a contest similar to what my good friend Mariuca did on her blog. She had her readers guess as to where she and her husband were vacationing, too. Plus, she had questions to answer along the way with those being the first to answer them correctly being determined as the winner(s).

Now, my vacation is going to be starting on Sunday, December 5. The night before on December 4 is when it ends.

Here are some of the rules:

1. You must have at least one verifiable blog, and doesn't matter which type of service you use. The reasoning is because part of the prizes include ad space on this site and possibly my WBE site, too. When commenting, please provide a link to your blog OR the blog which you want linked to.

2. You must have a verifiable Paypal account. All international participants must have one or they will not be eligible to win. I don't need to know the Paypal account info now, but DO NOT participate if you DO NOT have one. Failure to have one will result in the next person that meets all qualifications and answers all questions correctly taking prizes of the one who doesn't have a Paypal account.

3. Anyone from around the world can participate in the contest. The prize structure is different between those living in the U.S./Canada than those international participants.

4. The contest begins as soon as this is posted, and ends at the following times:

-December 4 at 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time and 8:59pm West Coast Time in USA

For anyone else that wants to play, you can use this World Clock site to match-up these time zones to know when the contest ends. This is done so that everyone around the world has the same exact amount of time to play along and answer the provided questions below.

5. Comments on this site will be moderated to prevent those from possible cheating and copying other participant's answers. All comments will be posted when the contest ends.

6. I reserve the right to refuse participants that attempt to leave abusive or inappropriate spamming comments for the contest. You will automatically be banned from winning if that occurs. NO EXCEPTIONS!

The following questions are an attempt to cater to those in the U.S. and outside the country. Also, my sports readers and international followers have some questions that give them a chance :

1. When is my birthday?
Clues:
-It falls between now and when I leave for vacation on December 5. Not what day of the week, but the month and number of day I was born on.
-My birthday is listed on FB for those that know me there. Also, you can find it in the 2009 archives in November or December. Also, I made reference to my birth date on the Basic Bloganomics Changes located in the November 2010 archives.

2. Which female model was born on the same exact day in history as me?
Clues:
-She's not from the America.
-She's the official spokesperson of China Airlines and for Longines(a Swiss company).
-She was born in Taiwan and is an occasional actress.

3. What U.S. state do I currently live in?
Clues:
-It is in the eastern USA.
-It has the Atlantic Ocean to the east of the state and Appalachian Mountains to the western part of the state.
-It is known as the Tarheel State.
-NASCAR and college basketball are very prominent in that state.

4. Which college team is my favorite in all of sports? Note: The name and nickname(not mascot) MUST be included in the answer.
Clues:
-The team is located in the same state that I attended elementary school at. The elementary school name is Country Estates Elementary school.
-In September, I watched them play the season opener on Labor Day weekend. You can check my 2010 September archives on here to find that out.

5. Which city am I vacationing to?
Clues:
-It's a city I've never been to before, so no need looking back on my entries for it.
-The city is located in the eastern USA in the Eastern time zone.
-It is also located in the southern USA in the Sunshine State.
-Many tourists from around the USA and world come there during the holiday season. It is especially child-friendly. However, there's more than enough to do for anyone there.
-An NBA team plays there, and they just opened up a new arena to play in this year. They've been a consistent playoff contender the last few years and the last player to be taken with the first overall pick out of high school is their star. And yes, I plan on seeing that team play while I'm there.

Those are the five questions. The first one to answer all five questions correctly and has met all the requirements listed above, will win the contest.

Here is the prize structure:

Grand prize winner(First to answer all questions correctly):

Good luck to all who participate!

This Thanksgiving Weekend

Thanksgiving weekend is here and that means Christmas will get here for us all before we know it. I'm very much looking forward to December for not only the holiday, but that I'm going to be taking me a vacation before it gets here, too. So that means I need to prepare for the trip, too.

Of course, we all don't need to be reminded of what it is like on Black Friday. I've worked on Black Fridays in retail in the past, and it wasn't an enjoyable experience to say the least. One year, it rained very heavily and I had to frequently help customers to their cars with items. It would have helped to have rain boots on that day since my work shoes were soaked as a result of the weather.

While it continues to rain here on this Thanksgiving weekend, I've been looking into purchasing some Burberry rain boots. I know those boots will come in handy since it does rain quite a bit in the winter here. At least they'll be around when I need them.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I wanted to wish all visitors a Happy Thanksgiving wherever you are out there. I'll update this blog with something new on Black Friday.

Thanksgiving Day Graphics

Happy Birthday Gagay!

Since it is already November 24 in her country, that means it is the birthday of my very blogger friend Gagay. As most of you know by now, my name for her is SDWHH(Sexy Doc With High Heels). Well, she's sexy, she's studying to be a Pinoy Medical Doctor, and wears high heels so it fits. She writes on The Latest Buzz, too.

She's someone I crossed paths with last year and we've been friends ever since. Her school schedule is hectic, but she finds time to balance all she can in her life there in the Philippines. She'll post about sports and she even plays some of them, too. Don't make her mad because she has zero trouble speaking her mind on anything which I've seen her do before. Nonetheless, she's a good friend to all that know her.

Recently, this print became available after someone spotted a pic of her on a billboard. Text was then added to the print. I wonder if Gagay will sign some of them especially if she becomes a household name the world over.

Happy birthday Gagay!

Happy Birthday Niko!

Today, November 22, is the birthday of Niko. She writes on many blogs including Girls Rule, Trendy and Heartily Yours, Yena's World, Artsy Niko and Niko's Home. Oh yeah, she does have a lot of blogs.

I don't Niko as well as some of my other blogger friends, but she is a very active blogger. She does create memes such as Girl Talk as well as charitable causes like she created last year in an attempt to save a young boy's life. That showed me all I needed to know about this sweetheart of a woman. She's spoken very highly of by her friends. She's also a wife and mother outside the internet, too.

Happy birthday Niko!ha

Awesome Friend Award

Thanks to Bill Vieira and Gagay for passing along the Awesome Friend Award to me that is once again late in posting. You guys are indeed awesome friends, too!

ANYONE listed on my Blog Roll can feel free to grab this award!

Life Is Good Award From Shydub!

Thanks to Shydub for passing this Life Is Good Award to me back in August. Yeah, since I'm just now posting this, anyone can feel free to pass the "You're REALLY, REALLY Late Posting This Award" to me. Or "How Can You Forget?" award to me. Better yet, "Why Even Bother To Post This Three Months Late?" Award. Go ahead, create it. I dare ya! Anyway, onto this award....

Rules:

1. Answer the 10 questions.
2. Give this award to six other bloggers
3. Link back to the person who gave this award.
4. Let them know about the award.

1. If you blog anonymously, are you happy doing it that way; if you are not anonymous do you wish you had started out anonymously so you could be anonymous now?
No. This is who I am. I understand why someone would do that with the way the internet is, but some also abuse that privilege. I personally like to know who I'm talking to, and those that come by know who they're talking to.

2. Describe one incident that shows your inner stubborn side.
Too many to list. But what really comes to mind is how careless I was with finances and the trouble it got me into when I was younger.

3. What do you see when you really look at yourself in the mirror?
My own reflection. Duh.

4. What is your favorite summer cold drink?
Ice tea, southern style. Since I was working up north much of the summer, I didn't get to have that much here in North Carolina.

5. When you take time for yourself, what do you do?
Travel. Go to sporting events, museums, casinos, etc.

6. Is there something you still want to accomplish in your life? What is it?
There's plenty I want to do. I'd like to retire early especially now that the age maybe raised soon. Traveling outside my country is high on the list, too.

7. When you attended school, were you the class clown, the class overachiever, the class shy person, or always ditching school?
I was actually the shy person, but could be a clown at times with those I knew well. I never missed a day of high school, so ditching definitely didn't apply to me.

8. If you close your eyes and want to visualize a very poignant moment in your life, what do you see?
I was finally able to see some of our country's greatest landmarks, sports facilities, and more the last two years after struggling for awhile financially. There's plenty more for me to see.

9. Is it easy for you to share your true self in your blog or are you more comfortable writing posts about other people or events?
Most of the time, but some things are better off left unsaid when it comes to blogging. This is my escape from the daily grind and I attempt to avoid bringing my life outside the internet online too much.

10. If you had the choice to sit and read or talk on the phone, which would you do and why?
I guess that depends on who I'm talking to and the mood I'm in. LOL!

Anyone that is currently listed on First Commenter Scoreboard can grab this award. If anyone else hasn't posted this award yet, you're free to do so.

Happy Birthday Fanofreds!

Today, November 18, is the birthday of long-time buddy fanofreds which is one word standing for Fan Of Reds. The Cincinnati Reds are his favorite team which you'll clearly figure out when you see his blog called Nachos Grande.

Essentially, we both got our starts as bloggers on Sporting News and then broke away on our own. It was actually a wise decision as it turned out because SN has completely done away with blogging as of a few months ago.

Chris aka fanofreds, is the ultimate baseball card collector, and his posts remind me of a time when I was heavily into that hobby, too. You'll frequently see him comparing past and presents brands with one another and reviewing them, too. Also, he makes trades with other fellow bloggers and posts about them on his site. If you're a baseball card collector, past or present, give this guy's site a look. Plus, he's a college professor, so he's a very bright guy as well.

Well, television sets around my viewing area interrupted with the following message. If this was the result of a local blackout, someone's got some explaining to do! LOL! Happy birthday buddy!

I used to never do things like this because of The Way I Used To Be,
Jenny is sweet as is Kittykat as she is amazingly me,

I Love/Hate America is not only a great site, but a blog to remember,
While multiple-time contest winner Czaroma has a birthday in December

If you can't understand this rap, then go hire a translator,
Don't make me mad, or I can get as bad as Darth Vader,

Don't get in over your head abusing cuz your image is ruined,
And never realizing you don't know what the heck you're doin,

Besides, all you blogger haters could never put me in tears,
Your blogs aren't all that, I get better competition from Britney Spears,

I still don't blame my friends for wanting to block their haters out,
Better to keep your mouth shut, be a fool, and remove all doubt,

I know I missed pointing out some of my friends,
You can still see them on my blog list and other odds and ends,

The Free Agent is done rapping, and thanks for viewing,
I hope you'll come back to see what else I'm brewing!"

National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Pics!

On Labor Day of this year on my Oklahoma City mini-vacation, I decided to spend the day at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The experience was definitely better than I thought it would be.

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is located in Oklahoma City. It has the largest collection of Cowboy and Western Heritage artifacts and memorabilia in the world. More than 10 million visitors a year come to find out more about the history of the West.

There are several things to like about the museum. But for me, the best part is being able to walk in an old-style Western town like you see in the movies and shows such as Bonanza and famous John Wayne movies. The walk in a Western town is dark, but the detail and work they did for their visitors is amazing.

You'll even see artifacts from Wayne and other famous past Western legends - even former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. There are some areas of the tour that you CANNOT take pictures in. It is detailed on the map they give you when you begin the tour.

Anyway, here are the many pics I took of this very impressive facility. This is a must-see place if you ever come to OKC! Enjoy!

Still more pics to come on here including my tour of Fenway Park in Boston!
