BWE Newsletter: November 30, 2009

Note: This is fictional, and none of this is to be taken seriously. It is about BWE(Blog Wrestling Entertainment) in which bloggers are written into storylines. This is kayfabe which means the entire entry is part of storylines with some facts to make it work. Some of the opinions expressed here are inside jokes amongst us as well. And yes, the locations and travel are NOT real.

Note: AB means Associated Bloggers

Dorothy L Signs With BWE

Ontario, Canada(AB)
- Dorothy L, owner of the Women's Self Esteem site, has signed a contract with BWE Promotions. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The deal was finalized upon completion of CPR/First Aid training she recently took part in for a position in the company. According to sources close to BWE, Dorothy will be a Self Esteem Consultant as well as be on hand at arenas to assist in CPR for wrestling performers.

The Canadian-born resident will not compete in a wrestling ring within the promotions, and that was another reason for the delay of the deal being finalized.

Dorothy wasn't available for comment on this story. It is not known if she'll work on both the BWE or EBW brands.

Gagay & BWE Reach Agreement

Davao City, Philippines(AB)
- Gagay and BWE have come to an agreement on a deal. The Filipino blogger signed a deal after negotiations progressed well.

Gagay, better known for her recent blogger movie role in the Walking Newspaper, signed the deal after playing basketball and softball games in which her team won this past weekend.

The Pinoy Medical Doctor will likely help wrestling performers with injuries and ailments. It is being said that she could wrestle in the ring for BWE because of her athletic background.

When asked about BWE, Gagay wasn't hesitant at all to show her excitement about signing on with the promotion as well as appreciating the CEO, too.

"Thankie DF," said Gagay about BWE CEO David Funk. "Weeeeeeeeeeeh! I'm in BWE! Weeeeeeeeeeeh!"

It is not known for sure what role she will be in for Blog Wrestling Entertainment or what brand she'll represent. She recently celebrated a birthday as well.

Blogger's Rumble Location Under Renovation

Alhambra, CA(AB)
- The S&J Arena will now be undergoing renovations in preparation for the upcoming Blogger's Rumble Pay-For-View event.

Cacai M, the owner of the S&J Arena, has been working tirelessly in getting the arena ready to host the event. Because of her business background, she's in the process of legally renaming the facility as Cacai M's Place.

The Filipino-born blogger has used her own thoughts, ideas, and resources in renovating the state of the art facility.

BWE hasn't announced a date for the event, but Cacai M has also been working on making it compatible for anyone that chooses to watch it on-line.

"Right now, the event will be best viewed with Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome," said the S&J Arena owner. "I'll be there for the live event, and I can't wait to see some of my blogger friends, too."

The Blogger's Rumble will see 20 female blog wrestling performers from both BWE and EBW compete in a Royal Rumble-type match for promotion supremacy.

End of the page

That's the latest BWE news! And again, this isn't to be taken seriously. More BWE news, including when the next EBW event will be, is coming soon!

And finally....

The very next day on November 30, 1974 the Oklahoma Sooners, my favorite college football team, overcame a 14-7 lead to beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers 28-14. The win extended their unbeaten streak to 28 games in a row as well as finish the regular season with a 11-0 record. Because of a two-year probation, the Sooners couldn't play in a bowl game. However, they ended up being the only undefeated team in D-1A, and won a share of the national championship with USC. The Sooners won the AP National Championship.

Take care everyone!

Ernie Davis Wins Heisman Trophy on November 28, 1961

On November 28, 1961, an African-American becomes the first African-American to win the most coveted individual prize in American football. It was on this day that Syracuse running back Ernie Davis won the Heisman Trophy in a time where African-Americans had a tough time getting scholarship offers to play sports in school while trying to establish racial equality.

Davis, who later become known as the Elmira Express, was on outstanding football player at Elmira Free Academy. So much so that he was named an All-American in high school while also excelling at baseball and basketball, too. His talent garnered him 50 scholarship offers to play college football. He would choose Syracuse.

In 1959, Davis helped Syracuse win the national championship after capping their season with a win in the Cotton Bowl Classic over the Texas Longhorns. Syracuse hasn't won a national title since.

He was named an All-American for his play in 1960, but it was the following year where his best was yet to come.

Not only was he was a great running back, he was a solid cover cornerback and very capable tackler, too. He was a big running back at the time at 6'2" and weighing in at 210 lbs which helped him garner scholarship offers.

The 1961 season seen his team finish 8-3 where he rushed for 823 yards and 12 touchdowns breaking the then-school records set by legendary football player Jim Brown. Ironically, he wore the same No. 44 as Brown, too.

The last game of his career was in the Liberty Bowl as Syracuse beat the Miami Hurricanes 15-14. He was named MVP of the game rushing for 140 yards and touchdown as well as catching a pass for a two point conversion in bitter cold conditions. Little did anyone know this would be the last football game he would ever play.

Three of the four top vote-getters for the Heisman Trophy were African-American(Bob Ferguson of Ohio State and Sandy Stephens of Minnesota joined Davis). Since the award was first given out in 1935, only four times had an African-African American appeared in the top four vote-getters. Davis beat out Ferguson for the Heisman Trophy with 824 votes to 771.

The Washington Redskins chose him as the No. 1 overall choice in the NFL Draft. The AFL's Buffalo Bills also chose Davis as the No. 4 overall pick. Redskins owner George Preston Marshall was known for being tight with his money, and decided to sign 8th round pick Ron Hatcher out of Michigan State instead. Marshall traded Davis and rights to Cleveland for another African-American player in Bobby Mitchell. At the time, Jim Brown was in the midst of an iconic career in Cleveland, and the thought of Davis joining him in that same backfield excited Browns fans. But it wasn't to be.

Shortly after graduation from Syracuse, Davis was diagnosed with leukemia. Because of the disease, Davis missed out on playing in the College All-Star Game against the NFL Champion Green Bay Packers. He maintained a positive attitude up until his death on May 18, 1963 which was Jim Brown noted in Sport Magazine.

"I find it difficult to believe he's gone," said Brown. "Maybe it's because I never heard him complain. The way he acted he had me believing he'd make it. I knew Ernie when he was perfectly healthy. I knew him when he was sick. I watched him when I knew he had leukemia but he didn't. I watched him after he found out. I tried to see a difference. There wasn't any. He asked for nothing, wanted no special consideration, but was always grateful for whatever he received."

Just before his death on February 3, then-U.S. President John F. Kennedy decided to honor the achievements of Davis when he sent a telegram to Elmira:

"Seldom has an athlete been more deserving of such a tribute. Your high standards of performance on the field and off the field, reflect the finest qualities of competition, sportsmanship and citizenship. The nation has bestowed upon you its highest awards for your athletic achievements. It's a privilege for me to address you tonight as an outstanding American, and as a worthy example of our youth. I salute you."

A movie called The Express is based on his story with Rob Brown playing the role of Davis. Though it did receive mainly positive reviews, the film has been largely criticized for falsifying some of his story to sell tickets.

Davis dealt with racial tension in America in his rise to college football stardom. He became a legendary player at Syracuse doing what was then unthinkable by becoming the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. The only thing that put a halt to what could have been a legendary career in the NFL was a disease that no race is exempt from being diagnosed. Nonetheless, Ernie Davis still holds his place as a landmark player and person in college football and in life. For that, he should be remembered as not only one of the greatest college football players ever, but one of the best human beings, too.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I wanted to make a quick post to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is always a special time for me because my birthday always is around that time. In fact, I was born on a Black Friday, so that might explain some of the craziness in my posts! LOL! Only kidding.

Anyway, my time on here will be sporadic until the beginning of next week because of the holiday as well as my birthday on Sunday.

Also, I've been working on relaunching another site that I had up last year. A few of you already know what that is, and it's my hope I'll have it ready to view at the end of next week.

Last, I'm really thankful for the many friends I have through blogging, but even more so this year because of being able to befriend many across the world. It makes it very easy to come on here to blog and visit you all as a result of that. So thank you to all my blogger friends, and you all know who you are.

Happy Thanksgiving!

NHL Forms on November 26, 1917

On November 26, 1917, six franchises formed what would become the National Hockey League. It was on this day that owners of the Montreal Canadians, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs, and Toronto had officially met for four days in Montreal at the Windsor Hotel to discuss the future of the National Hockey Association. The NHL was officially born as a result.

Disputes between the owner of the Toronto Blueshirts and the rest of the owners of the National Hockey Association led to the league's demise and the discussions that led to the NHL being formed. The Toronto franchise was given to the Toronto Arena Company temporarily upon joining the new league.

Like most professional sports franchises, the NHL struggled in its early history. The 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic didn't help matters when the Stanley Cup Finals were canceled due to the outbreak that led to Canadians star Joe Hall dying. Also, the Montreal Wanderers folded the franchise in large part due to a fire that burned down Montreal Arena, their home rink. The Quebec Bulldogs were out of the league by 1925 after relocating to Hamilton, Ontario.

Despite the setbacks, the NHL did win the Stanley Cup every year except 1925. But by 1926, the NHL was the only team competing for the Stanley Cup as well as expanding new teams.

The league added the Boston Bruins and Montreal Maroons in 1924-25, New York Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates in 1925-26, and the New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Cougars in 1926-27. In 1925, ten teams were in the NHL, but economic setbacks loomed.

The Great Depression, and later World War II, had financially crippled the league which reduced the number of teams from ten to six. By 1942, the Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs(originally the Blueshirts), Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, and Detroit Red Wings(formerly the Cougars) made up what is now known as the "Original Six".

The league continued on with those six teams, but competition from the Western Hockey League in the 1960s forced the NHL to expand again. So by 1967, the NHL added six teams: Minnesota North Stars(now Dallas Stars), Los Angeles Kings, Oakland Seals(relocated to Cleveland before merging with Minnesota), Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and St. Louis Blues. The Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres would also join the league three seasons later. The league was split into divisions for the first time as a result of the expansion.

The first real threat to the NHL was the World Hockey Association in 1972. The NHL decided to expand once again by adding the New York Islanders and Atlanta Flames(now the Calgary Flames) that year. Two years later, the NHL added the Kansas City Scouts(now the New Jersey Devils) and Washington Capitals. The league had 17 teams, and their plan to block the WHA from expanding into those new markets with stadiums seemed to work. The expansion led to a realignment of two conferences in 1974 with the west being the Campbell Conference and the East being the Wales Conference.

The WHA and NHL competed for signing the game's top players, but the WHA folded in 1979 as an agreement to send four teams to the NHL had taken place: Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers(now Carolina Hurricanes), Quebec Nordiques(now Colorado Avalanche), and Winnipeg Jets(now Phoenix Coyotes). After a very successful 1980s, the league would grow even more.

By 1991, the San Jose Sharks joined the league to be followed by the return of the Ottawa Senators(folded originally in 1934) and the Tampa Bay Lightning a year later. The Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers came into the league in 1993. The Nashville Predators joined in 1998, Atlanta Thrashers in 1999, and finally the Minnesota Wild and Columbus Blue Jackets came aboard in 2000. The league currently has 30 franchises. Because of yet another expansion, the league realigned with three divisions in the Eastern and Western Conferences.

Despite the expansions, labor disputes existed. The first major dispute was to start the 1994-95 season which led to the reduction of games from 82 to 48. But the 2004-05 campaign was canceled due to a lockout. This is the first, and to date, the only time in history that a major professional sports league canceled its entire season while returning to play the following year. The new deal was for six years.

The NHL has seen a return to very respectable attendance numbers around the league since the lockout in 2004, but television coverage is another matter. ESPN, who had carried NHL games since the network began in 1979, dropped the sport after the lockout. However, NHL reached an agreement with NBC and the sport now shares its revenue based on each advertising sales of each game.

The NHL has expanded into markets all over the world throughout its history which is one reason it still has enjoyed success. No other star had a hand in the growth of the league than Wayne Gretzky. His iconic career as well as eventual trade from Edmonton to Los Angeles helped to bring more teams to the West Coast in the 1990s. Other stars such as Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, and Patrick Roy also made their marks on the game.

It was on that November day in 1917 at a hotel in Montreal that the league began. Even though the NHL had been threatened to cease operations because of economic depression, it continued on in spite of competition from other leagues, a flu epidemic, and serious labor disputes that would loom later including losing an entire season. For that, the NHL deserves credit for being able to overcome many obstacles in route to becoming the most successful hockey organization in the world.

Happy Birthday Gagay!

She has a very busy schedule with school as she tries to keep up with blogging and tweeting, too.

She recently invited me to join her Triple Medical Celebration: BlogThings Game.

Happy Birthday Gagay!

Grange Signs Contract That Forever Changes NFL

On November 22, 1925, a college football legend had signed a contract that would forever change the fortunes of a struggling NFL. It was on this day that the "Galloping Ghost" Harold "Red" Grange signed with the Chicago Bears in a deal worth $100,000. The day before, Grange completed his iconic collegiate career helping his Illinois Fighting Illini to a victory over Ohio State 14-9.

Grange's status as the top star in American football was legendary as he was the sport's stop star in the Roaring 20s. College football was king in those days, and the NFL was seen mainly as a castoff league. Teams folded and the league was on the brink of extinction. That was until Chicago Bears founder George Halas made the one single move that changed the perception of the pro game.

Four days later on Thanksgiving after signing the landmark deal, Grange and the Chicago Bears played against the Chicago Cardinals. It was the beginning of a 19-game tour that would span 17 cities in 67 days. With Grange's ability to draw fans and the league touring to promote around the U.S., the NFL finally had a glimmer of hope for its future. And it worked.

There was no game that was more evident of how great the idea was than on December 6 when the Chicago Bears made their way to the Polo Grounds to take on the New York Giants. The Giants nearly folded the franchise, but a game with the Chicago Bears helped save it.

Over 65,000 fans came out to see Grange and the Bears win 19-7 at the Polo Grounds. Grange had a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown in the contest.

In a time where most players earned less than $100 per game, Grange's contract changed everything. Not only was the contract the richest ever at the time, Grange brought much needed notoriety and legitimacy to the pro game.

Even though the league would struggle into the Great Depression in the 1930s, the NFL would go on to be the most popular sports league in American history.

Oddly enough, Grange would get into a contract dispute with the Bears which prompted him to start his own league, the American Football League. However, the league lasted one year and he came back to the NFL with his New York franchise before signing back with the Bears in 1928. He would play until 1934 as both a running back on offense and defensive back on defense. Grange helped the Bears win the 1932 and 1933 NFL Championship.

The National Football League eventually expanded as they merged with another American Football League in 1970. They currently have 32 teams and is the top drawing sport in the United States.

Grange retired from the game in 1934 and went on to become a motivational speaker and sports announcer. He died in 1991 at the age of 87.

He is one of two players(Bronko Nagurski is the other) that was part of the initial classes in both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame. Grange is widely considered to be one of the greatest football players ever. In fact, ESPN named him the greatest college football player ever in 2008.

The rules changed for signing college players as a result of Grange signing with the NFL. And of course, there's the extremely popular NFL Draft that first started in 1936 in which collegiate players are drafted to the pro level.

The Grange contract signing saved one football league while shocking the collegiate game. The NFL was given instant credibility and eventually overtook the college game as the most popular brand of football in America. Perhaps the contract signing that didn't sit well on the collegiate level could be summed up best in a quote by Grange:

"I'd have been more popular with the colleges if I had joined Capone's mob in Chicago rather than the Bears", said Grange.

The impact of this signing cannot be overlooked for helping to save the league at a time when it looked like it would fade away.

Six Million Dollar Blogger

This post is in response to my very good blogger friend Stacey of Stacey Avenue with the link titled "Bionic Human". I told her I was going to write a parody of the popular 1970s hit TV show The Six Million Dollar Man. Anytime I hear or see the word "bionic", it makes me think of the opening intro for that show. So with that post of hers, here's a parody intro of that show and new role for Stacey:

(Stacey begins blogging and checks in with the Blog Station)

(Stacey Tee suffers a near fatal illness because of the virus getting to her and her blog which renders her right arm, right eye, and legs useless)
Narrator: Stacey Tee, a blogger barely alive.
(Stacey is shown with doctors on the operating table in a government facility)
General: Gentleman, we can rebuild her. We have the technology. We have the capabilities to make the world's first bionic blogger. Stacey Tee will be that blogger. Better than she was before. Better...Stronger...Faster.

Gagay makes her big screen debut as woman that is a walking newspaper of information. Soon after, jealousy from competitors who bring news in their own way begins to surface around the internet. This makes Gagay more determined to report the news in a timely and effective manner while silence her critics in the process as they get more aggressive to find ways to bring her down. Will Gagay be able to remain the top source for news?
Note: Controversy arose after news broke out about Gagay's film being produced. She originally reported it on her site, but others claim they did so first. In a statement released during production of the film, Gagay let everyone know she was a medical doctor that was plenty smart enough to read between the lines. The "walking newspaper" was signed to an exclusive movie deal much to the chagrin of her critics.

Behind the Blog
Lead actor/actress: Dhemz
Plot:
All she wanted to do was proudly enter her daughter Akesha in a smile contest. Dhemz was happy about the support she got for the contest, but was determined to get to the bottom of why it abruptly stopped despite having her emails ignored. When she asked other bloggers about whether or not to pull Akesha out of the contest because of rule changes and possible cheating, it made it difficult for her to decide. The next day, the contest was suspended and Akesha was out even as many of her supporters said she was the real winner. But little did the contest creators know that Dhemz is a veteran blogger experienced on dealing with menacing and manipulative figures in the blogging community. Can she get to the bottom of why this happened and uncover the tactics used behind the blog?
Note: This movie wasn't going to be produced at all until Dhemz was offered what may have been the largest contract for any role ever made. The terms were not publicly disclosed, but it is largely believed that Dhemz can afford Akesha a larger allowance for helping her around the house now. Akesha's popularity has skyrocketed because of the mainstream exposure in this film. The film was produced in a very short production time which is one reason why Dhemz was offered a large sum of money for the lead role in the film.

Forgetful Princess
Lead actor/actress: DJ Tammy
Plot:
DJ Tammy has been on a roller coaster ride of success with her Beyond Hot movie, BWE career, and appearing on the BWE Disclosed magazine in the summer. But in this role, the forgetful princess is busy running an exhibit and posting on blogs. Nonetheless, the red-hot Filipino blogger knows how to wow audiences as they fall in love with her forgetful ways. She becomes a media sensation overnight, and makes headlines across the blogging community for suing BWE CEO David Funk for humorous abuse. Even if this hot princess is forgetful, her role in this film is anything but. Hot is putting it very mildly on what you see in this film! Rosilie co-stars.
Note: Legitimately, Tammy did have lawsuits and issues with a posting site before and during the making of this film. She even skipped a day due to what she described as uncontrollable tummy pains from laughter at the BWE CEO's blog. However, some did question whether it was real or not while many think it is just a pre-existing injury to hold out for money for the film and from him.

Blog Fusion
Lead actor/actress: Shydub
Plot:
After her very successful film debut in Worth's Road, Shydub takes on the role of a medic that helps to find identical matches for those ailing sites needing a "blog fusion". Some sites depended on the "blog fusion" to save them from dying a slow death. One such site was on the brink of death, and couldn't find a compatible match. However, Shydub was able to help find a match, but was she able to help keep the site alive with an emergency "blog fusion"? Shydub's switch to an action-drama was flawless, and it shows in this film why many are raving about her already.
Note: Even though she received many awards for her first film, some critics questioned why she took a role for an action-drama. Shydub knows her destination may lead to nowhere, but she proved why she's already a bonafied actress. Her versatility will land her more popular roles in the future should she want them.

That's all for now. Thanks for viewing the latest blogger movies!

BCS Bowl Game Projections & Random Thoughts: Week 11

I haven't had the chance to post about the BCS Bowl Games on here, but I'll look at how I think it is right now. A lot of games took place that have changed the outlook of the BCS picture, and some are very much in the running with plenty of time left in the season.

BCS National Championship:
Florida vs Texas

It's looking very much like a lock between Florida and Alabama to play Texas in this game. Those two will play for the SEC Title which the winner will go on to play for the BCS Title. Texas appears to have an easy road, and only the Big 12 North winner could stop them in their conference title game.

Fiesta Bowl:
Iowa vs Boise State

To me, this bowl opens the door for anyone else who finishes really strong to deserve a spot. We all know what Boise State was able to do the last time they played in the Fiesta Bowl. Iowa leads the field of contenders which includes Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, and Penn State. Should Iowa falter, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Sugar Bowl:
Alabama vs TCU

The SEC at-large bid will likely be here between Florida and Alabama. And if it is Alabama, they'll look to erase the pounding they took last year in the Sugar Bowl against another Mountain West team: Utah. If TCU gets a lot of help, they could be playing for the national title. In case you didn't see it, TCU pounded Utah to make a statement for anyone else in the nation that needed convincing if they were a legit team.

Orange Bowl:
Georgia Tech vs Cincinnati

Georgia Tech has played solid football, and only a loss in the ACC Championship Game keeps them from going to a BCS Bowl Game. Cincinnati has a crucial match-up with Pittsburgh coming which the winner represents the Big East and likely a spot in the Orange Bowl as they try to finish undefeated. Cincinnati could also play their way out of the BCS should Pitt win, but it's still possible both could get in even though I don't see it happening.

Rose Bowl:
Ohio State vs Oregon

This is the one BCS game that is a virtual lock to happen at this point. Ohio State worked their way back into the BCS and Big Ten race after Iowa had lost two games in the conference. Oregon has two losses as well, but as anyone noticed against USC, they can be unbeatable for any team in the country to face.

Still alive:
Pittsburgh: If they beat Cincinnati, they likely knock the Bearcats out as they get an automatic bid. If they lose, it will only be the Bearcats getting in unless somehow one of the undefeated teams loses before the bowl games.

Oklahoma State: They have two losses, and they have to win out to have any shot at going to a BCS Game. Their Bedlam Series meeting in Norman against Oklahoma appears to be the one game that may keep them from being in the discussion. They could use more help though.

Penn State: To me, they don't have much of a chance to get in unless Iowa loses again. If that happens, Pitt wins against Cincinnati, and Oklahoma State wins out, it will be interesting to see who gets the nod for the BCS at that point. Then again, an undefeated team losing before the bowl games could send another one of those teams into BCS, too.

Random thoughts:

I have followed them for most of the season, but I have to give a shout out to SMU. I even went by the university on vacation in Dallas in October. Since Houston lost at UCF on Saturday, SMU is now in control of their own fate as they lead the C-USA West Division as they continue the quest to make their first bowl game appearance since 1984 - three years before the "death penalty" was imposed on them. They play at Marshall and at home against Tulane to end the season. June Jones should get some props for the job he's done as it is clear SMU can finally see the light at the end of tunnel in returning to a respectable program. Props to the Mustangs!

I have to give credit where it is due for Texas Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy, who tied the record for the most wins of any starting quarterback with 42 on Saturday. He could reach as high as 46 before it is done this year. That record might be another one that won't be surpassed again in college football history. Imagine a player averaging over 11 wins a year for a career, then you begin to understand how difficult that will be to top.

Although I didn't agree with Jim Harbaugh's decision to go for two in the 4th quarter against USC with a big lead, one can't deny the job he's done for Stanford. They were a 1-win team in 2006, and their dominating win over USC shows just how far along they've come. Good job Stanford!

Last but not least, I can't end my post without talking about the Oklahoma Sooners. They pounded Texas A&M at home as they won their 29th consecutive game in Norman which is the longest current home winning streak in the nation. Landry Jones threw for a career-high 392 yards and five touchdowns in a 65-10 win. That's how you respond to a very ugly offensive performance against Nebraska the week before. That win makes them bowl eligible.

And with that,

BOOMER SOONER!

Happy Birthday Clarissa!

Clarissa is a good friend of mine, and it is already her birthday in Japan. She is the author of Kizuna, and is a Filipina friend that is now living in Japan after being married.

Sometimes when I least expect it, she'll leave a comment on one of my entries even if I can't always return the favor. I recently became friends with her on Facebook as well which I appreciate. She's a very kind, positive person that I'm glad to be friends with.

So with that, Happy Birthday Clarissa!

Tragedy in the Ring

On November 13, 1982, a boxing match that would forever change the landscape of the sport had taken place. It was on this day that World Lightweight Champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini defended his title against the No. 1 contender in South Korean fighter Duk Koo Kim at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. The event was a live broadcast in the United States which turned out to forever change the fortunes of four lives and the sport after the outcome.

Even though he always fought in the Lightweight Division, it was a struggle for Kim to make the 135-pound weight limit before the fight. But, he was not deterred in his quest for the title as he wrote out the message "live or die" on the lamp shade in his hotel room that the media mistakenly took for "kill or be killed". Kim had a very respectable record of 17-1-1, but had only fought one time outside of his country(in Manila, Philippines in 1980 in a win against Tony Flores) as well as never facing anyone the caliber of Mancini in the ring.

Mancini had previously won the World Lightweight Title in May of 1982 when he defeated Arturo Frias. He had a successful first title defense with a 6th Round knockout of Ernesto Espana before taking on Kim. Mancini had a record of 25-1 with his only loss coming in 1981 against Alexis Arguello.

In the early going of the fight, the two boxers traded punches with one another. At one point, Kim had the champion reeling when he tore Mancini's left ear with a punch as well as swelled up his left eye. Mancini's left hand had swelled to a point where it was twice its size.

As the fight went on, Mancini began to take control as he landed many more punches than Kim did. Kim's knees were buckled at one point in the 11th Round by the champion, but Mancini could not put him away.

By the 13th Round, Mancini had nailed Kim with numerous punches in a row, but the challenger was able to fight back as the match continued on.

As soon as the bell sounded for the start of the 14th Round, Mancini hit Kim with a right, missed a left, then hit him with another hard right that put the challenger down. Referee Richard Green stopped the fight, and Mancini retained his title.

As Mancini was celebrating, Kim had collapsed in his corner where he was taken to a medical facility not long after. Brain surgery was performed on Kim in an attempt to save his life, but he died four days later as a result of injuries suffered in the fight. Kim was just 23 years old.

Mancini attended Kim's funeral in South Korea, but he still blamed himself for his death. Mancini strongly considered retirement because of the death of Kim, but was encouraged by friends and family to go on and that it was an accident. However, Mancini's boxing career was never the same.

Mancini did come back with two fights in 1983, but they were far from his dominating ways before. He lost his title to Livingstone Bramble in 1984, and then again to Bramble the following year in a rematch. He then lost by a controversial split decision against Hector Camacho in 1989 before fighting one last time in a loss to Greg Haugen in 1992. He finished his career with four straight losses, and a record of 29-5.

The aftermath of the fight led to immediate changes in the sport, and two unfortunate suicides, too.

The WBC immediately reduced the fight rounds from 15 to 12. Kim had never fought any match longer than 12 in his career, and Mancini had fought in three of them. The WBF, IBF, and WBO all began to operate 12-round matches, too.

Another change in regards to medical care for boxers were the pre-match checkups. Before the Mancini-Kim fight, boxers only had their blood pressure and heartbeats checked. That was changed when boxers had to go through electrocardiograms to go along with brain and lung tests.

Kim's mother had flown in from South Korea to be with her son at the hospital before he was taken off life support. After being in a deep depression for three months, she took her own life after drinking a bottle of pesticide.

Referee Richard Green, who also reffed the Larry Holmes-Muhammad Ali match in 1980, also blamed himself for Kim's death for not stopping the fight sooner. He was the referee for one more boxing match in 1983, but he committed suicide as well on July 1, 1983 at his home in Las Vegas. He was 46 years old.

Since retirement, Mancini has been able to move on. His lifelong dream of acting became a reality and has since owned two production companies. Also, he was a boxing analyst for the short-lived Celebrity Boxing show on FOX in 2002. He's made other appearances as an analyst including on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

Even though medical care has increased in boxing since that time, deaths have still occurred in the ring. Since that time, a recorded eight deaths have taken place in the ring or immediately after they were completed.

The most recent in-ring boxing death was Filipino Flyweight Lito Sisnorio in April 2007 in Thailand in a controversial decision against Thai fighter Chatchai Sasakul. The Philippines Games and Amusement Board has officially banned all Filipino fighters from fighting in Thailand as a result of Sisnorio's death. Furthermore, Sisnorio's role in the fight wasn't officially sanctioned by the Philippines Games and Amusement Board which caused the controversy in the first place.

Nonetheless, boxing is very much a violent sport that can permanently end one's career or life at anytime. And as you can see with the result of the Mancini-Kim fight, lives can be forever changed by those not fighting in the ring. Despite boxing's deaths and recent struggles, they have produced some of the most memorable moments and legends that the sports world has ever known. Boxing, like other sports, has a good and bad side to it.

The photo is from Sports Illustrated showing the final punch by Mancini on Kim.

Thanks for viewing this flashback!

Returning on Friday

I'll be returning to visit blogs and drop ECs on Friday because of a long day at work tomorrow as well as driving home, too.

I wanted to thank everyone for your visits as well as dropping my ECs. I'll be able to return the favor on Friday before I have to head back on the road to the same job site here in South Carolina on Sunday. Then I'll work until the following Monday, so it will be a very busy time for me before Thanksgiving.

I'll be visiting those of you back on Friday. Thanks again!

Dinosaur Depot: Coelophysis

The Coelophysis was a small carnivore, and one of the first known dinosaurs. The name is Greek which stands for "hollow form" because of the size of its limb bones. It lived during the late Triassic Period and early Jurassic Period.

Some of the features of the Coelophysis were that it had a slim body which included a long neck as well as tail. In fact, the tail was used to counter the weight of the upper body especially when it moved at fast speeds.

The dinosaur was a meat-eater as evidenced by the curved and jagged teeth that were sharp enough to tear apart small lizards. They had large eyes to go along with good eyesight which also helped them locate smaller prey.

They had four digits on the hand, although only three of them were of use. The hind limbs had three toes with a raised hallux. Another special feature it had was a wishbone, or furcula, which was the earliest known of its kind.

The remains of the Coelophysis had been found in New Mexico by David Baldwin in 1881, but it didn't get its name until 1889 from Edward Drinker Cope. In 1947, more fossils were found at the Ghost Ranch which wasn't far off where the original remains were located. Evidence has suggested that the Coelophysis in New Mexico may have died because of a severe flash flood. This also suggests that they likely traveled in packs to help hunt down larger prey because of the large number of them found at the location.

Because of a debate among paleontologists that those remains at the Ghost Ranch were of different characteristics than elsewhere, they were called Rioarribasaurus. As a result of a vote, the Ghost Ranch is now home to the actual Coelophysis specimen.

Most paleontologists agree that there were male and female versions of the Coelophysis.

The skull of the Coelophysis became the first dinosaur in space in 1998 by the Russian Space Station, Mir.

Sam Bradford: Who Will Draft Him?

Since I followed Sam Bradford's career at Oklahoma and that he's entering this April's NFL Draft, I'm going to list which teams would be willing to draft him. This is taken into account that no trades or roster moves that haven't been made yet before the NFL Draft takes place. This is based on a team when given the opportunity to take him, and they do it.

*****-They'll take him
****-Strong possibility
***-If he's the best available
**-Doubtful
*-Won't waste their pick

Arizona Cardinals
Arizona has Kurt Warner, who is still productive at the position. But he turns 39 in June, and the confidence in Matt Leinart has worn very thin. Brian St. Pierre isn't the long-term answer to replace Warner when he goes. If the team thinks they can win with Warner for another two years, and Leinart can't succeed him, they may gamble on Bradford in the draft. ***-If he's the best available

Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons are very happy with Matt Ryan and what he's done in only two seasons in the league. Chris Redman has had some success in his career as a backup. John Parker Wilson is the third quarterback, and is a rookie this year. Bradford would have to be a backup for this team, and I don't see Atlanta drafting him for that reason. *-Won't waste their pick

Baltimore Ravens
Joe Flacco is the future for the Ravens, and has gotten better in only his third year in the league. Troy Smith has played admirably when called upon. John Beck has played for Miami as a starter, but was traded. Like Atlanta, the Ravens have their future secured here with Flacco unless they think Bradford is only going to be a career backup. *-Won't waste their pick

Buffalo Bills
The Bills are a young team, but patience is wearing thin for them to get back to their glory days of the early 90s. Trent Edwards has played well at times, but has been inconsistent in his career. Ryan Fitzpatrick has experience, but he's not the long-time answer. Depending on if there is a coaching change, this could set them up to take a quarterback for the future. ***-If he's the best available

Carolina Panthers
Jake Delhomme has had a forgettable season in 2009, and the turnovers have had Carolina fans calling for his head at quarterback. Matt Moore has played in some games for Carolina, and A.J. Feeley is far from being the long-time answer. The coaching staff is on the hot seat for Carolina, so it's not out of the realm to see them take a player like Bradford in the upcoming draft. If Bradford is still projected high, the Panthers won't be able to get him because of not having a first round pick unless a trade is made. *****-They'll take him(if he falls to them)

Chicago Bears
The Bears traded their first round picks in 2009 and 2010 to land Jay Cutler from Denver. The team is high on Caleb Hanie as the backup despite the lack of experience. Cutler just signed a contract extension through 2013, and the Bears can fill other needs in the draft and free agency since they finally feel they have the quarterback of the future here. *-Won't waste their pick

Cincinnati Bengals
Carson Palmer has come back from an injury-plagued 2008 season, and has the team playing very competitive this year. J.T. O'Sullivan has experience as a backup, but was traded away from San Francisco for a reason. However, it's doubtful to think they'll draft Bradford to back up Palmer. **-Doubtful

Cleveland Browns
The Browns offense is a mess, and it all starts because of the ineffective play from the quarterback position. Patience is running thin, and off the field issues haven't helped them either. Derek Anderson has fallen off since signing an extension, and Brady Quinn has yet to grab the position he was drafted for in Cleveland. This is a team on the verge of starting over again, and Bradford could be a fit for them if that happens. ****-Strong possibility

Dallas Cowboys
Though it wouldn't be a very far drive for Bradford to come to Dallas, I don't see it happening with the play of Tony Romo as of late. Jon Kitna is a solid backup, and has had some success in the league. Dallas is a team built to win now, so I don't see them taking Bradford at this point. **-Doubtful

Denver Broncos
Many questions loomed in Denver at the quarterback position after trading Jay Cutler away to Chicago. Kyle Orton came over in the trade, and has managed the offense well. Chris Simms hasn't played much since 2006, and is the backup. Unless they feel Orton is only a stop gap for the offense, the team could draft Bradford to develop him for starting at the position in his 2-3 year. ***-If he's the best available

Detroit Lions
Even though he has been hurt, Matthew Stafford's upside is undeniable. He was the team's No. 1 overall choice, and this is where many think Bradford would have ended up had he come out last year. Daunte Culpepper has had success in the league, and is still a good backup. The quarterback position is secured in the eyes of the Lions, so Bradford won't be taken here. *-Won't waste their pick

Green Bay Packers
The Packers have Aaron Rodgers, and he's the future of the franchise. Matt Flynn has only played a few snaps, but he does have talent. The quarterback position is young in Green Bay, and I don't see the point in adding another rookie to the mix unless Bradford's stock slips dramatically. *-Won't waste their pick

Houston Texans
Houston is an improving team, and Matt Schaub's play is one reason after the kind of year he's had so far. Dan Orlovsky has experience though he was traded from Detroit in the off-season. Rex Grossman is too inconsistent, but has experience in games at the NFL level. With this team on the way up, I don't see Bradford going here. *-Won't waste their pick

Indianapolis Colts
Everyone knows that the Colts have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and will go down as one of the best ever when he's done in Peyton Manning. Jim Sorgi is a career backup, and Curtis Painter was a late round pick with virtually no experience having not played in any games. Manning will turn 34 in March, and he's still got plenty left. That said, the Colts could draft Bradford and have him learn from Manning until he retires if he's available. ***-If he's the best available

Jacksonville Jaguars
David Garrard manages the game well, but the team still wants to see more improvement from him. Luke McNown has game experience, but is a backup for a reason. The team has other needs especially on the offensive line, and the team isn't in a rebuilding mode at this point. **-Doubtful

Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs acquired Matt Cassel from New England to be their starting quarterback, and he has played well despite the poor record. Brodie Croyle has some experience as the backup. The team is still in transition, and I don't think Bradford goes to the Chiefs. *-Won't waste their pick

Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins are a running team, and Chad Henne has managed the game well for them as well as give way to the wildcat offense. The team drafted Pat White for the wildcat offense and be the backup quarterback. I don't see Bill Parcells and the Dolphins drafting another quarterback in 2010. *-Won't waste their pick

Minnesota Vikings
Brett Favre was brought in this year as the missing piece for the Vikings to make the Super Bowl. So far, it has worked well. That doesn't say much for Tarvaris Jackson, who was the starter last year in the opener. Sage Rosenfels is a solid backup, but is far from being the future of the team. Even Favre can't play forever, and the possibility of drafting Bradford makes sense if they plan on starting him by 2011. Besides, pairing him up with another Oklahoma Sooners legend in Adrian Peterson sounds tempting to me. *****-They'll take him(if available)

New England Patriots
Tom Brady is definitely back after season-ending knee surgery a year ago. He'll go down as one of the best ever when he's done. He'll be 33 next August, and it's clear he has plenty of football left. Brian Hoyer has only played a few snaps in the NFL as the current backup. The Patriots are still a win now franchise, and developing another quarterback behind Brady maybe worth the gamble. ***-If he's the best available

New Orleans Saints
Jeez, do you think New Orleans is happy with Drew Brees? They've got a perfect record through Week 8, and he's thrown 16 touchdown passes so far. Mark Brunell is still in the league as the backup. Chase Daniel is a rookie that went undrafted. The Saints offense is very explosive, and Brees will still only be 31 in January. If they do get another quarterback, it will be an experienced one. *-Won't waste their pick

New York Giants
Ironically, the person that many compare Bradford to is Giants starter Eli Manning. Manning manages the game well, but does have spells where he turns the ball over too much like right now. David Carr was to be the future quarterback in Houston, but has played the role of a journey man backup since he parted ways from Houston. The Giants are still a very good football team, and I don't see them drafting Bradford. **-Doubtful

New York Jets
Mark Sanchez has had ups and downs, but growing pains are to be expected for the rookie in 2009. He's still their quarterback of the future with Kellen Clemens backing him with some experience. The Jets are back on the rise, and there's no need for another quarterback to develop here. *-Won't waste their pick

Oakland Raiders
The Raiders have been a mess for a few years now, and JaMarcus Russell hasn't saved the franchise since being their top pick in 2006. Bruce Gradkowski has some experience, but isn't the long-term answer. Many problems exist in the Raiders organization, and it's probably best if Bradford weren't selected by them anyway. It's hard to know what the Raiders will do in 2010 like it is with them every year. ***-If he's the best available

Philadelphia Eagles
Let's see. Donovan McNabb is still playing at a Pro Bowl level. The Eagles still move the ball with Kevin Kolb as the backup. They have Michael Vick, too. Enough said. *-Won't waste their pick

Pittsburgh Steelers
Ben Roethlisberger has been a part of two Super Bowl wins, and won't turn 28 until March. Charlie Batch has filled in well as an experienced backup when asked. Dennis Dixon is the third string quarterback with athletic ability. The Steelers aren't in a position to develop another quarterback right now. *-Won't waste their pick

San Diego Chargers
Philip Rivers has had another great year at quarterback despite the Chargers problem in the running game. Billy Volek manages the game well as the backup. The Chargers problem isn't with the quarterback and I don't see them drafting one in 2010 either. **-Doubtful

San Francisco 49ers
Alex Smith is finally showing signs of being a good NFL quarterback with his play in the last couple of weeks. Shaun Hill has plenty of experience, and has played well at times. If Smith continues to improve in 2010, then the organization will be confident to keep him the starter which lessens the need to take a quarterback like Bradford. If he falters, then it could happen. **-Doubtful(for now)

Seattle Seahawks
Matt Hasselbeck has played well when he has actually played. Seneca Wallace has played well as the backup, but isn't the long-term answer in Seattle. Mike Teel is the rookie third stringer that hasn't seen action except in pre-season. With Hasselbeck not being able to stay healthy, the possibility of drafting a quarterback like Bradford exists. ***-If he's the best available

St. Louis Rams
Marc Bulger's play is seriously declining, and Kyle Boller couldn't be the future of the Ravens when he was drafted by them. Keith Null is the third string quarterback that hasn't played but in the preseason. The Rams will have a high first round pick, and Bradford may possibly land there. However, should he be available in the second round, they'll take him then. *****-They'll take him

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay is rebuilding, and Josh Freeman was drafted to be their future quarterback. He's set to start this week against Green Bay. Josh Johnson fumbled the ball seven times and had eight interceptions in his time as starter. Byron Leftwich has experience, but has been declining as a quarterback. With Freeman as the starter of the future, the team has other pressing needs on draft day. *-Won't waste their pick

Tennessee Titans
Vince Young has finally taken back the quarterback position as starter, and played a very manageable game this past weekend against Jacksonville. He won't wow you with his arm as much as he will with his legs. Kerry Collins is at the tail end of a respectable career as the backup now. The team does need to address other areas, and see if Young is the player they thought he would be when they drafted him 2006. ***-If he's the best available

Washington Redskins
This has been a year where nothing much has gone right for the Redskins. From the demotions to ineffective offense, the Redskins faithful have run out of patience in the nation's capital. Jason Campbell has been very inconsistent, and has fumbled the ball eight times, losing three, while throwing seven interceptions so far. Todd Collins is an experienced backup, but isn't the answer Washington needs. Being that the team is likely to see many changes in the offseason as it stands now, a new quarterback being drafted may happen. ****-Strong possibility

The teams I have taken him are who I think will likely draft a quarterback and not necessarily Bradford. It's hard to say where he goes because of his recent surgery to repair his throwing shoulder. However, I do think he has a shot to be a solid quarterback at the next level even if it isn't right away.

The teams that likely will take him by my predictions: Panthers, Vikings, Rams

Oh by the way, Bradford turns 22 on Sunday.

Dinosaur Depot: Eoraptor

Since my recent visit to the Dinosaur World in Glen Rose, Texas, I'm starting a series of dinosaur entries on this site to post on here from time to time. Sometimes, I'll be able to post photos from the park in creating these posts. So let's get started.

The Eoraptor was a thin-bodied carnivore that stood only about 3 feet(1 meter) in height after full growth. The Eoraptor Lunensis is Greek for dawn hunter. It is widely recognized as the primitive dinosaur during the Triassic time period which was anywhere between 225 to 250 million years ago.

The Eoraptor has a mix of fossils which makes it difficult to place the dinosaur into a specific group. For this reason, many scientists theorize this as the first primitive dinosaur because of the different features it had. Some scientists have placed them as saurischians which are in the same group as the Tyrannosaurus Rex because of having a similar hip structure.

The weight of the Eoraptor was about 20-25 pounds(roughly 10 kilograms). It ran upright on its hind legs and the arms were half the size of the legs. They had five-fingered hands, though two were so tiny that they were of no use for hunting. The three fingers had claws used for hunting small prey which are the same characteristics of theropods.

The teeth of the Eoraptor had characteristics of carnivore and herbivore dinosaurs because of its curved, saw-edged features. However, only some of the teeth had that feature which made it difficult to hunt larger prey. The jaw didn't have a sliding joint which made it impossible to hold larger prey, too. These features were not of a true predatory dinosaur.

The origin of the dinosaur lived in what is now the northern portion of Argentina in the Ischigualasto Basin. However, the area was a river basin during the Triassic time period, and is now mostly desert. It was discovered in 1991 by University of San Juan paleontologist Ricardo Martinez. A team, led by Paul Sereno, investigated after discovery and came up with the name of Eoraptor in 1993.

Oklahoma Sooners Football Chronicles: The Beginning

The University of Oklahoma's history began nearly twenty years before it would enter the union as the 46th U.S. State. They wouldn't be referred to as the Sooners until after admission to the union, too. The word "sooner" was a commonly used name before Oklahoma became a state.

Sooners were described as settlers who would enter the Assigned Lands too early to claim land. This was until then-U.S. President Grover Cleveland signed the Indian Appropriations Act of 1889 that opened up the land to be settled upon. Disputes for land involving the sooners and other participants were handled by the U.S. Department of Interior.

The time was 1889 and the territory of what is now Oklahoma had been governed by George Washington Steele, who made it a mission to create public school systems along with increasing education. Despite having very little funding, Norman Territorial University had been established in December 1890. David Ross Boyd was the first President of the University of Oklahoma in 1892 which seen the first students enrolled that fall.

An instructor by the name of Edwin DeBarr had led a group of students into helping to purchase a football from the growing Spalding Company. They played for recreational purposes only, but the seeds to what was to come had been planted.

The game would take a giant leap forward when John Harts arrived from Winfield, Kansas. Harts, who played football at Southwestern College in Winfield, had immediately shown his skills as the game's interest grew. Because of leadership qualities, he was elected team captain of the football team as well as assume responsibilities of organizing and managing games.

In 1895, Harts scheduled a game against the veteran Oklahoma City town team in Norman. Even though he organized the first ever game at the school, Harts had a difficult time finding enough players to field a team. Bud Risinger, a local barber shop owner, and Fred Perry were the final two players needed to fill the spots of the roster just one day before their first game. Neither one of them were enrolled at the university. The first game was set on November 7, 1895, and it was a regrettable experience for Harts.

Oklahoma did not score in the game nor did they muster a first down against the Oklahoma City town team. Oklahoma didn't have enough players to finish the game, so they had some from the Oklahoma City town team to come over to them to finish the contest. Eye witness accounts have said the game was a brutal one for Oklahoma, and they lost by the score of 34-0. Because of this, Harts would never schedule any more games for the school. Better days lie ahead for the school.

The fanfare for the school was still low, and they wouldn't have a head coach for the 1896 season. It would also be 12 years before Oklahoma would be admitted into the union.

As for Harts, he was done at Oklahoma as he would eventually head to the Arctic to look for gold. Later on, he would surface in the California area while being properly credited for launching the Oklahoma Sooners football program. As a matter of fact, here's a reproduced letter dated October 6, 1942 to Oklahoma President Harold Keith from Harts in Los Angeles after being credited as the founder of Oklahoma Sooners football:

Thanks for viewing Oklahoma Sooners Football Chronicles. More of the history of the Sooners will be coming soon.
