1920: The first game in the Negro National League is played when the home team Indianapolis ABCs beat the Chicago American Giants 4-2. This is the first Negro league to establish stability and credibility starting in the Midwest. Chicago would win the first championship in the new league.
1939: In Major League Baseball(MLB), New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig plays in his 2,130th consecutive game. This record would stand for 56 years until Cal Ripken of the Baltimore Orioles broke it.
U.S. History
1885: The popular women's magazine, Good Housekeeping, is founded by Clark W. Bryan in Massachusetts.
World History
1945: In Berlin, Germany, the Soviet Union announces the capture of the city. German forces also surrendered in Italy during World War II as well.
1969: Queen Elizabeth 2, a British ocean liner, begins the maiden voyage to New York City. It would take nearly five days to arrive at her destination.
1999: In Panama, Mireya Moscoso becomes the first woman to be elected President of that country.
