1751: The first recorded game of cricket is played in America in what is now known as Manhattan, New York where the Fulton Fish Market now stands. New York XI defeated London XI on that day.
1991: In Major League Baseball(MLB), Oakland's Rickey Henderson steals his 939th base to break Lou Brock's all-time record. That same night, Texas Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan throws his seventh career no-hitter to set a new record overshadowing the accomplishment of Henderson.
U.S. History
1931: The Empire State Building in New York City is open. It was built as a 102-story building which would be the largest in the world for the next 42 years.
1941: In New York, Orson Welles' Citizen Kane debuts which is now considered by many to be the greatest film ever.
1967: Elvis Presley marries Priscilla Beaulieu, and they would divorce six years later.
World History
1707: England and Scotland unite in The Act of Union as both countries adopt a single flag.
1948: North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is established with Kim II Sung as President.

Yeah Frank, that was a big day with two MLB records being set although I only saw highlights of Ryan's no-no that night when it happened.
It is tough to narrow it down, but I use criteria based on importance, impact, and popularity to our culture and the rest of the world.
