1938: Preston North End defeats Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the first ever televised FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. George Mutch made the only goal on a penalty kick after 29 minutes of extra time.
U.S. History
1789: George Washington takes the oath of office as he becomes the first President of the United States. This happened on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street.
1803: The United States purchases the territory of Louisiana from France for $15 million. This is otherwise known as the Louisiana Purchase. Exactly nine years later, Louisiana becomes the 18th U.S. state.
World History
1006: The brightest supernova in recorded history, Supernova SN 1006, appears in the constellation Lupus.
1945: After being married the day before, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun commit suicide as World War II is coming to a close. The Soviet Union troops raise the Victory Banner at the Reichstag Building.
1975: South Vietnam surrenders to North Vietnam effectively ending the Vietnam War.
1991: The Bangladesh Cyclone kills 138,000 and leaves about 10 million homeless. It is one of the deadliest cyclones on record.
1993: CERN announces that the World Wide Web would be free to anyone to use. This is the day the World Wide Web is officially born although the project began four years before with an initial website in 1991.
