Now here's your host, David Funk!!!!
Funk: Welcome everyone to the return of BWE Uncovered! This is a show where we look at pro wrestling from the past and now in the present. This is a show I did on my Sporting News blog as Big Sooners fan over two years ago. And what a show we have for you tonight!
-News on WWE on TNA
-BWE Recall looks back at the Jerry Lawler/Andy Kaufman feud.
-PPV Vault flashes back to the very first Starrcade event.
Latest News
-The Neilson Rating for the WWE Raw show was 3.4 on the January 5 event. Last week's rating was a 3.5.
-WWE Royal Rumble participants so far are Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio, and Kofi Kingston from Raw. The Undertaker, Triple H, Big Show, Vladimir Kozlov, and Shelton Benjamin have been announced for Smackdown!. Cena defends the World Heavyweight Title against JBL. And Jeff Hardy defends the WWE Title against Edge. That's the card so far, and the PPV takes place on January 25.
-John Cena's new movie 12 Rounds has released its poster. Cena plays Detective Danny Baxter who's girlfriend is kidnapped by an ex-con he's connected to from the past. The WWE Films movie is due in theaters March 27 which is just before WrestleMania XXV.
-Ashley Fliehr, daughter of legendary wrestler Ric Flair, pleaded guilty on charges of intoxication as she received a 45-day suspension as part of a plea in which charges were dropped for assaulting an officer. She's placed under supervision, and will be subject to drug testing while on probation.
-TNA has removed the profile of Christian Cage on their site. Cage's contract expired with the company, and rumors are flying that he's set to sign with or has already signed with the WWE. Speculation has run rampant as to how he'll be used, but once it's confirmed, we'll post it here.
-At a WWE Raw house show on January 3, a fan was escorted from the ring after throwing a beer at Randy Orton while he was on the top turnbuckle ready to perform a move. After cops came to escort the fan out of the arena, Orton could be seen yelling and pointing to the backstage area where the guy was being taken to. Fans were happy this happened. Let this be a lesson, do NOT act this stupid at wrestling events! If you cross a wrestler, they will defend themselves and you will be escorted if caught doing things like this. I've seen it happen at many of the live events I've been at.
-Former WWE and ECW talent Stevie Richards suffered a collapsed lung at the end of 2008 as a result of an infection in which he had a chest tube inserted for a couple of days. He had to pull out of a scheduled event on December 27 for Maryland Championship Wrestling. He's scheduled for the January 9 NWA No Limits show.
-Barring any complications, Dave Batista should be back in the ring around June. He had surgery to repair a torn hamstring on December 26 in Birmingham, AL. If this goes according to plan, this could set the stage for Batista facing Orton(who put Batista on the shelf storyline-wise) at SummerSlam.
That's the wrestling news for now. Coming up later, we flash back to the very first Starrcade event. But coming up next, we talk about one of the most famous feuds in the history of pro wrestling. Come on back!

We're back on the return of BWE Uncovered! Now let's talk about one of the most notable feuds in the history of professional wrestling....
Andy Kaufman, a famous comedian who grew up admiring pro wrestlers, began wrestling women and was the self-proclaimed, "Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World" in 1981. He offered $1,000 to any woman who could pin him in the ring. In early 1982, Mid-Southern Champion Jerry Lawler would challenge Kaufman to a match. He took exception to Kaufman's antics saying that he was disgracing the sport. They had an on-going feud in which it finally resulted in a match between the two.
On April 5, 1982 in Memphis, TN, Kaufman suffered a "broken neck" as a result of a piledriver move by Lawler. Lawler actually gave Kaufman two piledrivers in the middle of the ring and that sent him to the hospital. Lawler was disqualified for this because that move was illegal in that promotion.
Then on July 29, 1982, they had an on-air fight on Late Night with David Letterman show. On that episode, Lawler slapped Kaufman, and Kaufman would retaliate by throwing hot coffee at Lawler after cursing him. This feud continued on throughout Mid-Southern Wrestling promotion for awhile after that.
The feud between these two was so convincing that it was a surprise to most everyone when it was revealed as a true "work" in 1999. This was 15 years after the death of Kaufman due to lung cancer. The movie, Man on the Moon in 1999 starring Jim Carrey as Kaufman, confirmed that this leagendary feud was a work. This was also confirmed in Lawler's book, It's Good to Be the King...Sometimes, that came out in 2002.
Kaufman was never truly hurt in this feud and him and Lawler were actually good friends behind the scenes. It is amazing that they kept this a secret for over 15 years after the death of Kaufman. The idea for Kaufman's retaliation on the talk show was Kaufman's idea and that looked so real between the two on that segment. What a job they did to sell this angle between the two.
In the movie Man of the Moon between scenes, Carrey remained in character and actually spit on Lawler who was also in the film(Kaufman did that to Lawler at one time during their feud). Lawler was stunned by this and actually grabbed Carrey by the hair and jerked his neck which sent Carrey to the hospital. Carrey was okay after this and finished the film. That was a very solid movie and great portrayal by Carrey of Kaufman. This was one of the most legendary feuds in the history of wrestling, and it still is what Lawler is best remembered for to this day.
OK, we're set for our last commercial break. When we return, we look back at the very first Starrcade event in 1983! Back after this....

We're back on BWE Uncovered! Now let's take a look back at an event that took place right in my own backyard in 1983....
Starrcade: Flare for the Gold
Date: November 24, 1983(Thanksgiving)
Location: Greensboro Coliseum; Greensboro, NC
Attendance: 15,447
Gate Receipts: $500,000
Close Circuit TV Audience: 40,308
Commentators: Gordon Solie and Bob Caudle
Interviewers: Tony Schiavone and Barbara Clarey
Match results:
-The Assassins w/Paul Jones beat Rufus R(Freight Train) Jones & Bugsy McGraw. Assassin #1 pinned McGraw.
-Kevin Sullivan & Mark Lewin beat Scott McGhee & Johnny Weaver. Lewin pinned Weaver, then Sullivan and Lewin used a foreign object to lacerate McGhee's head. Angolo Mosca tried to help, but was attacked, too.
-Abdullah the Butcher pinned Carlos Colon. Hugo Savinovich interfered using a foreign object that allowed Abdullah to pin Colon.
-Dick Slater & Bob Orton Jr. beat Mark Youngblood & Wahoo McDaniel. Orton pinned Youngblood. After the match, Slater injured McDaniel's left arm by jumping off the turnbuckle on to it.
-Charlie Brown pinned The Great Kabuki w/Gary Hart in a Title vs Mask Match to win the NWA Television Title.
-Roddy Piper pinned Greg Valentine in a Dog Collar Match. Valentine attacked Piper with the chain after the match.
-Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood beat Jack & Jerry Brisco in a "No DQ" match to win the NWA Tag Team Titles. Youngblood pinned Jerry Brisco in a match where Mosca was the special referee. The Briscos attacked the new tag champions after the match until Steamboat and Youngblood along with Mosca fought back.
Main Event:
-Ric Flair pinned Harley Race in a Steel Cage Match to win the NWA World Title. Flair won with a flying bodypress off the top turnbuckle to win the title and match.
Notes:
This was the first wrestling event that was shown entirely on close circuit TV, and was noted for having plenty of recognizable wrestlers. This event was created by Jim Crockett, owner of JCP Enterprises at the time. The WWF had begun to expand nationally, and Crockett held this event to compete with them. The event was successful after being heavily promoted on television sets and other advertisements. A winter storm affected some locations that had close-circuit television, too. This event would become the flagship for the JCP, NWA, and later, WCW.
Starrcade had the famous feud with Piper and Valentine in which Piper got a measure of revenge against Valentine for having lost 75 percent of his hearing in his left ear in April 1983.
Flair lost the title to Race that June, and a $25,000 bounty was put on him during that time to protect the title. Orton Jr and Slater attacked Flair by injuring his neck with a spiked piledriver, forcing him to an early retirement before he decided to return. Flair became the NWA Champion for the second time in his career by beating Harley Race on that night in a classic cage match. This effectively ended their feud.
The Steamboat/Youngblood vs Brisco Brothers match culminated after the Briscos turned heel on Steamboat and Youngblood before the summer. The Briscos won the NWA Tag Team Titles from Steamboat and Youngblood in June, but lost them at this event.
Orton and Slater faced Mark Youngblood and Wahoo McDaniel because Youngblood and McDaniel were storyline friends of Flair as they looked for retribution. But Orton and Slater won the match.
Charlie Brown was actually Jimmy Valiant in a mask, who was more notable with his storyline brother, Jerry, in their days in the WWWF. Valiant lost a Loser Leaves Town Match to The Great Kabuki that summer, and that's when Valiant become Charlie Brown. So the match became a Title vs Mask Match, and Valiant would have been suspended if he was discovered as Brown.
Colon and Abdullah continued their long feud from the World Wrestling Council in Puerto Rico. All other matches were not built up or resulted in storyline.
Well, that is all for the return edition of BWE Uncovered! Tune in next week as I will be having another BWE Recall, and more! From the studios here at the new Basic Bloganomics network, so long everybody! Have a great night!

I really missed these from the TSN days. Not being an avid wrestling fan any longer, I always enjoyed reading up on where the industry was going, as well as getting a good reminder of where its been.
Frag- I'm glad you enjoyed these. I'm still a fan of the business, but not like I used to be. I can't guarantee I'll do these evry week, but anything related to BWE will only be posted here. Thanks for stopping by.
As always, good stuff. I never got on the wrestling bandwagon but your articles are always fun reads.
I still do not know how you do this
fanofreds- I won't hold that against you for not being on the wrestling bandwagon. This is only part of the reason I changed the site because one-dimensional blogs only target one audience. I'm too insane to talk about one thing. Thanks for coming by.
MadMan- I ask the same thing about you when it comes to what you've seen in your life. Thanks for the continued support buddy.
Well Mr. Bloganomics, you surprised me on two counts this time.
1) I knew you were a wrestling fan, but this is the first post I've seen from you on this topic. Quite the coverage as I'm in the same boat with Frag.
Now if you go back to Pampiro Firpo, then you're onto something.
2) Thanks for the kudos!
Frank- Yep, this is just scratching the surface. You haven't seen BWE Throwdown or EBW UnCut yet! No problem on the kudos, and thanks for coming by.
Great post. I vividly remember Kaufman and Lawler on the Letterman show. Great television- they pulled it off and had everyone believing that this was real.
Thanks Swamp for stopping by.
Great work and great to see you back on TSN! I loved the updates and wonder if you have an idea of what Christian is going to do? My friend and I think he is going to show up on the WWE PPV coming up to mess with Cena, but it is too early to tell. Thanks for the read, and will be back again.
Thanks Leafs. That could very well happen with Cena and Christian. Besides, Cena is pretty much without a WM opponent now that Batista is out(which was the plan). And the fact the WWE dropped the ball big time over three years ago when they had Cena first come to Raw where he ran into Christian. We'll see how they handle this one though.
