Fantasy College Football Team Rankings: SEC Defenses

Finally, we wrap of the SEC rankings on defense. This was by far my toughest list of rankings yet, but this is what I came up with. These rankings in no way reflect how I pick teams to finish in the standings of their conferences. This is for anyone playing fantasy college football, and I hope you find these rankings useful. Enjoy.

SEC Team Defensive Rankings:
1. Auburn(Starters returning: 7)
The Tigers come into this season with plenty of experience on defense for a unit that ranked 6th in the nation a year ago. Sen'Derrick Marks moves from defensive end to tackle, and pass-rusher Antonio Coleman returns at defensive end. All three linebackers return led by Tray Blackmon, who played hurt a year ago. The secondary returns two starters and Aairon Savage moves to corner to start from the safety position.

2. Georgia(Starters returning: 7)
Georgia's defense has experience and depth to be quite possibly the best unit in the conference. The defensive line is very deep as they rotate players constantly, and tackle Geno Atkins is a force in the middle. The linebacking corps returns only starter in middle linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, but Rennie Curran is a play-maker. The secondary returns three starters led by corner Asher Allen. The defense was 14th in the nation last year.

3. Mississippi State(Starters returning: 8 )
The Bulldogs played very well on defense a year ago, and the back seven returns six starters after ranking 7th in pass defense a year ago. Kyle Love and Jessie Bowman return at the defensive tackle spots. The team's two leading tacklers return in middle linebacker Jamar Chaney and outside linebacker Dominic Douglas. The very experienced and talented secondary is led by free safety Derek Pegues.

4. South Carolina(Starters returning: 10)
This is a unit that is deep and experienced as they get a boost with the return of middle linebacker Jasper Brinkley from injury. Eric Norwood moves to outside linebacker from defensive end. The defensive line has three returning starters led by tackle Ladi Ajiboye. The secondary returns all starters from a unit that ranked 4th in pass defense a year ago led by strong safety Emanuel Cook. The unit must play the run better after a 110th nation ranking last year.

5. Tennessee(Starters returning: 6)
The Vols have gotten stronger on the defensive line as tackles Demonte' Bolden and Dan Williams return. Ends Robert Ayers and Wes Brown provide quick pass-rushers. Rico McCoy is the only starter returning at linebacker, but Ellix Wilson is a play-making middle linebacker. The secondary is the strength of the defense with depth and talent led by safeties Eric Berry and Demetrice Morley.

6. Florida(Starters returning: 8 )
The Gators have new coaches on defense, and will likely change things up from last year after getting torched against Michigan in the Capital One Bowl. Defensive tackle Javier Estopinan and end Jermaine Cunningham return up front. The linebacking corps maybe the best in the nation with Brandon Spikes, Dustin Doe, Lorenzo Edwards, and A.J. Jones. Three starters return in the secondary, but depth is a concern.

7. LSU(Starters returning: 4)
Defensive ends Tyson Jackson and Kirston Pittman return, but losing tackle Glenn Dorsey is big. Marlon Favorite and Ricky Jean-Francois will start in the middle. Darry Beckwirth is the only returning linebacker. Kelvin Sheppard and Jacob Cutrera are the likely starters at linebacker, but Cutrera has had health issues. Safety Curtis Taylor is the only returning starter in the secondary, and the cornerback position is likely the team's biggest concern on defense.

8. Alabama(Starters returning: 6)
Lorenzo Washington returns at nosetackle and Brandon Deaderick joins him in the middle. End Bobby Greenwood is expected to provide a consistent pass-rush. Linebacker Rolando McClain is the only lock as a starter as Ezekial Knight had a heart ailment in the offseason and Prince Hall was suspended during the spring for violating team rules. Safety Rashad Johnson, who tied for the SEC lead in interceptions with six last year, returns in the secondary.

9. Arkansas(Starters returning: 7)
The Razorbacks defensive line returns all four starters led by ends Antwain Robinson and Adrian Davis. Elston Forte returns at linebacker, but health is a concern with Wendel Davis injuring his knee as well as the spring suspension of starter Freddie Fairchild. Corner Jerell Norton is the only returning starter in the secondary, but the talent is there despite the inexperience as of the group as a whole.

10. Kentucky(Starters returning: 8 )
Jeremy Jarmon returns at defensive end where he led the team in sacks with nine a year ago. Tackles Corey Peters and Myron Pryor must show more consistency this year. Linebackers Johnny Williams and Braxton Kelley are back and Micah Johnson also saw the field alot last year. The secondary has depth, and is led by corner Trevard Lindley and safety Marcus McClinton.

11. Ole Miss(Starters returning: 7)
All-SEC tackle Peria Jerry returns as does end Marcus Tillman up front. Linebacker Ashlee Palmer returns after leading the team in tackles a year ago. Allen Walker was projected to start on the weakside, but he was suspended after an arrest for a DUI charge. The secondary sees Marshay Green convert from receiver to corner, and the other three starters return led by safety Jamarca Sanford.

12. Vanderbilt(Starters returning: 5)
Vanderbilt loses three starters on the defensive line and the entire linebacking unit has new starters. Steven Stone returns at end and Broderick Stewart starts opposite of him. The coaches are high on tackle Greg Billinger stepping up this year. Patrick Benoist and John Stokes looked impressive at the linebacker spots in the spring to ease some of the concern there. The entire secondary returns and is one of the SEC's best led by All-SEC corner D.J. Moore.

Stud defenses: Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi State
Rising defense: Tennessee
Falling defense: LSU

Overall analysis: Top to bottom, you will not find a better conference that has this kind of depth to select defenses for your fantasy teams. All defenses in this conference do have concerns, but would rank near the top in most other conferences. Auburn and Georgia both ranked very high in overall defense a year ago, and most of their starters are back. Mississippi State returns all their key starters from a year ago, so they shouldn't drop off. South Carolina will be tough on defense, but they have to play the run better. The Vols only real concern is inexperience at linebacker, but the unit is a solid start that could emerge to an elite one by season's end. Florida has new coaching changes on the defensive side of the ball, and should shore up many of the issues that plagued them in the bowl game a year ago. LSU has concerns in the secondary and Alabama now has depth issues, but both should be fine otherwise. Arkansas has a new head coach, and if they get over the concerns with their linebacking unit, they'll be fine. Kentucky has plenty of experience to be good this year as does Ole Miss. Vanderbilt will also be tough, but will have to progress quickly in what is a relatively new front seven in order to be solid start every week. You can't really go wrong with any of these units during the season, and ranking this conference of defenses has been by far and away the toughest for me yet. When they get into conference play, this is the best time to get your money's worth in fantasy football. There is no better conference in the land on defense than the SEC.

Fantasy NFL Violation Keepers League

Before I get started with this post, be sure to check the latest fantasy baseball players of the day on Lester's Legends' site. It was a strong day for pitcher Jeff Weaver after allowing no hits, but did not win the game. To find out how he and everyone else did yesterday, click the link below:

Fantasy Baseball Players of the Day: 6/28/08

Now onto the Fantasy NFL Violation Keepers edition.
Note: This is not an actual league or game that will be run.

Individual Player Leagues Point scale:
Arrests: 60 points
Positive test under NFL Substance Abuse Policy: 45 points per time
Game suspension for violating policy: 10 points per game
Year-long suspension: 60 points per year
Lifetime league suspension: 100 points
New contract holdout: 1 point per day held out
DUI/DWI: 45 points per count
Assault charge(extra 15 points against women and children): 45 points
Overly aggressive play resulting in fine: 10 points
Fines for comments bashing league, refs, commish: 10 points each
Serious crime charge(murder, sex crime, burglary): 60 points per count Note: All animal types including dogs is considered a serious crime.
Prison conviction for serious crime: 100 points

Now the point scale is the same for team keeper leagues. You just accumulate points as a team based on the point scale above, so you stand to gain many points if you have a team full of players that violate league rules and have trouble with the law. If I'm in a draft, I would want the first pick to select...yeah...you know who. However, this keep league starts at the beginning of training camp, and live/simulation drafts can be run until opening day of the NFL season. This league isn't official, but I guarantee some players would earn more points in this league than in ACTUAL fantasy football leagues! LOL!

Fantasy parody

Okay, it's time for a little parody of a fantasy sports song. Duh! This is a fantasy sports site, and since I write parody songs, this one fits the bill. The original song is titled 'Fantasy' by Mariah Carey. It's also been performed by Rhoda Morgan and Timbaland. But I found lyrics for Carey's version, so I'm using hers on here. I know opinions of her vary, but you can't argue with her success in the industry as she set herself apart with her outstanding talent. Anyway, I wrote this out in an hour though it's not my best effort. But I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Be sure to check my blog roll to the left of this page for more great reads out there. They'll be glad you stopped by. Eventually, I'll find more fantasy-related parody songs to post on here. I've done many of them in the past.

Also, I had some issues with my MS Word this week, so the SEC Defensive Rankings will be late getting out. I hope to have them up in a couple of days.

Weekly Blog Props

I'm gonna take a look back at some blog sites that I know as well as some that may not be familar to you. I'll provide brief commentary about that site as well as certain articles they posted this week that I recommend you see if you haven't. I'm posting these in no particular order.

FBKid's Sports Minute: This is a blog I came across on YB and also thru another friend of mine's site, too. This guy brings a an objective and very thoughtful approach to the game of football. He's recently posted positional rankings for the upcoming fantasy football season that I recommend all of you to checkout. His blog is well-written.

Football news from a chick: This girl has easily become one of my best cyber-friends in the last month that I met on YB, but she also works for ESPN doing research and publishing for them, too. In this blog, she posts the latest NFL news going around. She's also quite possibly the best blogger I've ever seen in replying back to comments on her blog as well as others across the internet, too. You can certainly tell this gorgeous blogger loves writing, and just be sure to check back to her blog because I guarantee she will reply back to your comments if you choose to leave any. That goes for your blogs, too.

Lester's Legends: Lester just recently posted his weekly tidbits that you should read and you've also seen me prop his fantasy baseball players of the day, too. He also posted a solid argument on a great football debate this week. This guy updates his blog quite frequently, and you should checkout the posts I'm recommending on there.

MoonDogSports: The Chick Pic of the Day posts are more than enough for guys out there to check his site. His latest post covers the sexy Katherine Heigl. Also this week, Moondog covered news on the UCLA football team as his Tennessee Vols team will play them in the season opener in college football. This is blog is very up-to-date, and covers a wide range of enjoyable and interesting topics for most anyone.

The Sports Muffin: The guys here definitely got their Muffin on this week with an entry everyone should read regarding the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Sean did a parody of the NCAA basketball tournament that featured matchups of events that are taking place at the games this year. They recently posted the results of the opening round of that tournament which was determined by the voters who read the blog. It was a very funny and creative take on the Olympics. They have posted some very creative and funny stuff, so you need to check this site out if you haven't done so already!

Fantasy Football Goat: This site has done a nice job recently of breaking down the NFL offensive lines this week with the latest one featuring the AFC West. They did a great job of breaking down the offensive lines as well as assuring the importance of how those units effect skill position players in fantasy football. Those articles are very useful for all fantasy football players.

Reel To Field: This week, fragnoli took a break from sports to post about the life and death of George Carlin. He also posted about various sports news this week as well as other things i an entry earlier this week. Like Moondog, fragnoli covers a wide range of topics and is one of the most creative people I know on the internet. That site should be required reading for everyone.

Mo's Marketplace: This was another week where Mo focused outside of sports in his entries. His latest article discusses ICANN's approval of top-level domains. Earlier in the week, he posted about communication in the workplace as well as popular phrase, too. If you want a break from sports to read news of a different variety, give Mo's site a look.

The Karmic Boomerang: For those of you who are on Sporting News, this is the blog run by Oregon Tailgater. This week, he wrote a very nice article about his son and his wife's recent birthday. He also continues to post his 'Getting To Know the 50 States" on there as well as his SN blog. He also posted his pick for the greatest moment in sports as a result of a member running a contest on SN. This is another site that goes well beyond the sporting world.

Nachos Grande: This is fanofreds' blog site for those of you who know him on SN. This is a site any baseball fan would love. He recently did a photo blog of Yankee Stadium after his trip to see them play the Cincinnati Reds, his favorite team. He also posts his weekly MLB rankings as well as reviews of baseball card sets that he's very familar with. This is a must-see site for baseball fans as well as those that are in the hobby of baseball card collecting, too.

Tribe Time Report: This is blog by npcPronk of SN. As you can tell by the title, this blog is all about the Cleveland Indians. If you're a fan of Cleveland or know someone who is, I recommend you see this blog and let others know about. He posts everyday about his favorite team.

That's what I have this week for blog props. If there's any blogs you recommend, you can suggest them in your comments and I'll post them in a blog entry.

All Star Baseball Board Game History

There's always been a part of me that wanted to know how fantasy sports came to be. Today, fantasy sports have become a huge money-making industry with the advent of the internet that has allowed computers to do the scoring for fantasy owners.

The origin of fantasy sports dates back to a fantasy baseball board game created during World War II when All Star Baseball was manufactured in 1941. Cadaco-Ellis was the manufacturer for the game and former Major League Baseball player Ethan Allen was the designer.

The game play was quite simple and targetted younger audiences. ASB had two spinners that were located at the top of the baseball board. Circular player cards, which were based on their abilities and statistics determining the size between the lines of the numbers, were inserted in the spinner that showed the result of each at-bat. Originally, a hole was placed in the cards which fit into a spinner. But by the 1960s, a plastic holder was used to prevent cards from tearing easily by inserting them in the top of holder while centering it on the spinner.

Peg holes were at each base of the board which were used if runners reached safely. If a runner(s) was on base, the pitching team then spun the alternate spinner that displayed zones which indicated the result of the runner advancing on a given play. The game had no pitching or fielding cards to use against batters which made the game more appealing to kids because the older audience preferred more realism. Pitcher cards did come with the game, and had batting stats on them even though pitching did not factor into the results of the game itself.

The earlier versions of the game had 40 player cards but expanded to 63 for later sets.

The original scoring chart for ASB looked like this:
1 = Home run
2 = Ground out and double play if runner is on first base
3 = Error by fielder; runner reaches base
4 = Fly out and runner(s) advance safely if any are on base
5 = Triple
6 = Ground out, and runner(s) advance safely
7 = Single and runner(s) advance a base safely
8 = Fly out and runner on third scores on sacrifice and others hold
9 = Base on balls or walk
10 = Strikeout
11 = Double
12 = Ground out and runners advance on force play
13 = Single and the runner(s) advance two bases on the play
14 = Fly out and runners cannot advance
No. 3 was eventually replaced with another fly out.

The early versions of the game had a mix of Hall of Fame players along with the current stars of the game until the 1980s. This was when the growing number of current players had more licensing rights to use their names with them having to sign an agreement form allowing ASB to use their batting statistics. Some players did decline the use of their stats, and none of them were ever compensated when they signed the agreement.

By 1995, the game was able to garner a MLBPA license which increased the cost of production despite it giving the cards a more designer-friendly look. This caused a cease in annual production of the game and the internet also contributed to the stoppage of production. Commemorative sets have been issued since that time. In some parts of their history, Cadaco sent out older player cards by mail as well.

ASB is recognized as one of the fifty most influential American board games of all-time. It is one of the two top-selling baseball board games of all-time along with Strat-o-Matic, their long-time competitor. It was the best-selling board game at one time, and is the only one of it's kind to have been sold at retail stores for over 50 years. Today, many past and present fans can find older editions and/or player cards of the game on eBay, where it has regained some of it's popularity.

Personally, I received two ASB games for Christmas as a kid, and I remember very vividly having the 1988 set which had popular players like Mike Schmidt and Nolan Ryan as well as my two favorites back then in Andre Dawson and Ryne Sandberg. I still have the Dawson and Sandberg cards in good condition, too.

What If? Gale Sayers 1965 season

This is my second post for the What If? Fantasy Football edition. This is where I look back at a season long before fantasy football became prominent among us in our society. Today, we look back at the rookie season of 1965 for Pro Football Hall of Fame legend Gale Sayers. I'm using the default scoring systems for Sporting News and Yahoo! to calculate the point totals.

Here's the point scale for SN(default configuration):
60 points for every touchdown
2 points for every rushing, receiving, and punt return yard gained
1 point for every kickoff return yard gained
2 points for every reception
1 point for every passing yard
-10 points for every kickoff return attempt
-45 points for lost fumble and interception
-2 points for incomplete pass

Here's the point scale for Yahoo!(default configuration):
6 points for every rushing, receiving, and return touchdown
4 points for passing touchdown
1 point for every 10 rushing and receiving yards
1 point for every 25 passing yards
2 points for every two-point conversion
-1 point for every interception
-2 points for every fumble
No points are given for receptions or return yardage in the default configuration.

Here are the stats for Sayers in 1965 and fantasy points for the SN game:
Rushing yards: 867 = 1734 points
Rushing touchdowns: 14 = 840
Receptions: 29 = 58 points
Receiving yards: 507 = 1014 points
Receiving touchdowns: 6 = 360 points
Punt return yards: 238 = 476 points
Punt return touchdowns: 1 = 60 points
Kickoff return attempts: 21 = -210 points
Kickoff return yards: 660 = 660 points
Kickoff return touchdowns: 1 = 60 points
Fumbles Lost: 5 = -225 points
*Incomplete pass attempts: 1 = -2 points
*Passing yards: 53 = 53 points
*Passing touchdowns: 1 = 60 points
*Interceptions: 1 = -45 points
Total points w/o passing stats: 4827 points
Total points w/passing stats: 4893
Total points per game w/o passing stats: 344.79
Total points per game w/passing stats: 349.50
Note: Teams only played 14 games in 1965.

Here are the stats for Sayers in 1965 and fantasy points for the Yahoo! game:
Rushing yards: 867 = 86 points
Rushing touchdowns: 14 = 84 points
Receiving yards: 507 = 50 points
Receiving touchdowns: 6 = 36 points
Punt return touchdowns: 1 = 6 points
Kickoff return touchdowns: 1 = 6 points
Fumbles Lost: 5 = -10 points
*Passing yards: 53 = 2 points
*Passing touchdowns: 1 = 4 points
*Interceptions: 1 = -1 point
Total points w/o passing stats: 258 points
Total points w/passing stats: 263 points
Total points per game w/o passing stats: 18.43
Total points per game w/passing stats: 18.78

*-Some don't consider passing stats at any position other than quarterback. But for the sake of it, I've figured the stats up with and without passing stats.

According to many historians, Sayers had the best rookie season of anyone in NFL history. He had a couple of great games that would have had fantasy owners drooling. The first coming on October 17 on the road against the Minnesota Vikings where he scored four touchdowns as the Bears won 45-37. But every single fantasy owner would have wanted him on a particular rainy and muddy day on December 12, 1965 against the San Francisco 49ers at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Have a look at these numbers for the SN game:

SN point total for game against San Francisco on 12/12/65:
Rushing yards: 113 = 226 points
Rushing touchdowns: 4 = 240 points
Receptions: 2 = 4 points
Receiving yards: 89 = 178 points
Receiving touchdowns: 1 = 60 points
**Punt return yards: 85-yard TD = 170 points
Punt return touchdowns: 1 = 60 points
Total combined yardage: 336
If the unconfirmed difference of yardage are all punt return yards: 49 = 98 points
Total points w/o the unaccounted for 49 yards: 938 points
Total points w/unconfirmed yardage counted as punt return yards: 1036
**-Unconfirmed(can't locate complete return yardage on-line) on the exact punt return yardage, and the total combined yardage could include kickoff returns which wouldn't count for as many points. Still, he had more than 938 points on that afternoon if SN had fantasy football in those days! I think he had a 1,000 point day, but I can't confirm it and anyone would have just taken the points without it anyway! Even Adrian Peterson's single-game rushing record day last year against the Chargers was 812 total SN points, which is great though! I'm not sure you could find anyone that tops a single-game SN fantasy points total than Sayers' game against the 49ers in 1965!

Sayers still holds the record for total touchdowns in a season by a rookie with 22. His career was cut short because of injuries, but he still led the NFL in all-purpose yards three times during his time in the league. 'The Kansas Comet' was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977 for his outstanding play despite a short career.

Fantasy College Football Team Rankings: SEC Offenses

Finally, we move on with my fantasy college football rankings as I look at the SEC Offenses. Enjoy.

SEC Team Offensive Rankings:
1. Florida(Starters returning: 7)
As long as quarterback Tim Tebow is in Florida and is healthy, the Gators offense has a chance at dominance. Receivers Percy Harvin, Louis Murphy, and Riley Cooper form a very potent corps. Running back Chris Rainey will likely start with Kestahn Moore and Emmanuel Moody likely to see sometime, too. The offensive line returns three starters from a year ago which is good because they have their usual tough schedule again.

2. Georgia(Starters returning: 8 )
Quarterback Matthew Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno return to lead a very experienced offensive unit. Mohamed Massaquoi returns at receiver and Kenneth Harris will likely start with him. Tight end Tripp Chandler is returning as well. The offensive line has three players who have started in games before, and four of the five that are projected starters are sophmores.

3. Tennessee(Starters returning: 8 )
Jonathan Crompton will start at quarterback after waiting three years. Arian Foster is back and is one of the best all-around running backs with the ability to run and catch the ball out of the backfield. Receivers Austin Rogers and Lucas Taylor give Crompton experienced options in the passing game. The offensive line returns all five starters from a year ago from a unit that allowed a nation-low four sacks last season.

4. Alabama(Starters returning: 9)
The Crimson Tide returns a veteran offense, but will operate under it's third offensive coordinator in as many seasons. Quarterback John Parker Wilson returns, but will have to pick up the new offense quickly for them. Terry Grant is speedy and big-play running back returning. Receiver Mike McCoy returns, and the program is very high on freshman Julio Jones. The experienced offensive line returns four starters.

5. LSU(Starters returning: 5)
With quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux now gone, Jarrett Lee or Andrew Hatch will replace them and neither has much experience. Running backs Keiland Williams, Richard Murphy, and Charles Scott are very talented and the group is deep. Brandon LaFell returns at wide receiver and Demetrius Byrd is a lightning play-maker, too. The offensive line is one of the nation's best with four starters returning.

6. Auburn(Starters returning: 8 )
Running back Ben Tate returns and they have depth behind him led by Brad Lester and Mario Fannin. Kodi Burns is the likely starter at quarterback and is in the midst of learning a new offense. Chris Todd will back him up. Rod Smith and James Swinton are the likely starters at receiver, and could have big years in the new pass-happy offense. The offensive line is one of the conference's best that returns all five that have started games in the past.

7. Arkansas(Starters returning: 6)
The offensive line returns four starters for new coach Bobby Petrino. Casey Dick will start at quarterback and has picked up the new offense fairly well. The team loses Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, but the Hogs are high on Michael Smith, who is now the starting running back. Returning receiver London Crawford leads a talented group, but the rest of the unit is inexperienced.

8. South Carolina(Starters returning: 6)
Chris Smelley has experience at quarterback, but Tommy Beecher could start in front of him. Mike Davis will start at running back with Brian Maddox seeing time, too. The receiving corps is loaded and deep led by Kenny McKinley, who led the SEC with 77 receptions a year ago, and Dion Lecorn and Moe Brown. The offensive line returns only two starters from a group that has struggled in recent years.

9. Ole Miss(Starters returning: 6)
Houston Nutt arrives at Ole Miss from Arkansas. Jevan Snead will start at quarterback, and he's inexperienced. The receiving corps is loaded which has Mike Wallace, Shay Hodge, and Dexter McCluster. Cordero Eason is in experienced and will start at running back. Enrique Davis will push for playing time at running back, too. Nutt does inherit an experienced offensive line that returns four starters from a year ago.

10. Kentucky(Starters returning: 4)
The offense will miss quarterback Andre Woodson, and Curtis Pulley will start now. Derrick Locke played well at running back last year and leads a talented group of running backs that will see Tony Dixon playing some, too. Dickey Lyons is the only receiver returning with starting experience. The offensive line returns three starters, and with the Wildcats going to a likely more run-oriented scheme this year, they should improve on an SEC-worst 38 sacks last season.

11. Mississippi State(Starters returning: 5)
The Bulldogs ranked 113th in offense a year ago, but quarterback Wesley Carroll returns and has experience. Anthony Dixon returns at running back and Christian Ducre and Robert Elliott provide solid depth behind him. Jamayel Smith and Aubrey Bell are returning at receiver, but Co-Eric Riley will play alot, too. The offensive line is a question mark with only one starter returning from a year ago.

12. Vanderbilt(Starters returning: 4)
Either Chris Nickson, who struggled with consistency and injuries in 2007, or Mackenzi Adams will start at quarterback. Receivers George Smith and Sean Walker return, but the rest of the unit is inexperienced. Jared Hawkins will likely win the starting job because Jeff Jennings doesn't appear to have recovered fully from ACL surgery. The entire offensive line is new for a unit that finished 103rd in total offense a year ago.

Stud offenses: Florida, Georgia
Rising offense: Tennessee
Falling offense: LSU

Overall analysis: The theme for the SEC has always been strong defenses and will be again this year. But Florida and Georgia are very experienced and talented at the skill positions to be options every week. Tennessee is still a solid option, but can be an elite one if Crompton progresses quickly in 2008. Alabama and Auburn have good talent, but they have new offenses so they have to be watched. LSU is much like Tennessee in that their numbers will depend on the progression of their starting quarterback - whoever it is. Arkansas and Ole Miss have new coaches and talent, but the Razorbacks have a fighting chance to be good on offense because of experience at quarterback and the offensive line. The bottom three teams have talent as well, but with so much inexperience among those schools, it's not a wise move to pick them up in the usually ultra-tough defensive conference that is the SEC.

Football News From a Chick

Okay, the title of this blog has nothing to do with me(obviously, I'm not a chick, right? LOL!), but rather the title of a site I'm recommending to you all.

This woman follows the NFL very closely and also works in the publishing industry for ESPN. She recently just started posting blog entries on blogger.com, and has posted updated news quite frequently on there since.

She's also a cyber-friend of mine that I met in the Yard Barker community, and has decided to post articles on here now. She's also a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan that also loves Donovan McNabb. You'll likely find her talking about her favorite team on there quite often.

So if you want to check for the latest football news as well as updates on the Eagles if you're a fan of them, I would check the following link out as often as possible:

What If? Sporting News & Yahoo! Fantasy Football Edition!

Okay, I'm gonna start a periodical series of fantasy football flashbacks. In these series, I'm going to pick out a player and season for him to see what his point total would be in today's version of the Sporting News basic fantasy game as well as the Yahoo! game. To peak the interest of football fans, I'm going to start with players before 1990 because fantasy football wasn't as prominent then. And since I'm a Chicago Bears and big-time Walter Payton fan, I'm going to start off by flashing back to his 1977 MVP season in the NFL.

Here's the point scale for SN(default configuration):
60 points for every touchdown
2 points for every rushing, receiving, and punt return yard gained
1 point for every kickoff return yard gained
2 points for every reception
1 point for every passing yard
-10 points for every kickoff return attempt
-45 points for lost fumble and interception
-1 point for incomplete pass

Here's the point scale for Yahoo!(default configuration):
6 points for every rushing, receiving, and return touchdown
4 points for passing touchdown
1 point for every 10 rushing and receiving yards
1 point for every 25 passing yards
2 points for every two-point conversion
-1 point for every interception
-2 points for every fumble
No points are given for receptions or return yardage in the default configuration.

Here are the stats and points in the SN game for Payton in 1977:
Rushing yards: 1852 = 3704 points
Rushing touchdowns: 14 = 840 points
Receptions: 27 = 54 points
Receiving yards: 269 = 538 points
Receiving touchdowns: 2 = 120 points
Kickoff returns: 2 = -20 points
Kickoff return yards: 95 yards = 95 points
Lost fumbles: 6 = -270 points
Total points: 5061
Total points per game(14 games): 361.5
Note: Teams played only 14 games in 1977.

Here are the stats and points in the Yahoo! game for Payton in 1977:
Rushing yards: 1852 = 185 points
Rushing touchdowns: 14 = 84 points
Receiving yards: 269 = 26 points
Receiving touchdowns: 2 = 12 points
Lost fumbles: 6 = -12
Total points: 307 points
Total points per game(14 games): 21.93
Note: Teams only played 14 games in 1977.
Sources: pro-footballreference.com, Sporting News fantasy football, Yahoo! fantasy football

According to pro-footballreference.com, Payton lost six fumbles so that's what I based that off. His 275-yard performance against Minnesota in late November was the highlight of that year - a then-single game rushing yards record. He was named MVP for that season, and the Bears made the playoffs for the first time since 1963 that year with a 9-5 mark.

If you want to see a past favorite player of yours on here, you can suggest it. However, I'm gonna ask that you only pick one season for that player, and that it's before 1990. I will do these every so often on here, too. Thanks for viewing, and be sure to check the links to the top left corner of the page!

Must-Read Sports and Fantasy Sites

I'm going to give a quick shoutout to some sites I've checked out in recent days as well those I'm familar with that's worth your time to read for yourself:

Moon Dog Sports: This is a site I discovered recently in the Yard Barker community. This blog is very well-written, and he took the time out from his posts recently to talk about copyrights after a problem he had earlier in the year. He's a very well-rounded sports fan, and I highly recommend that you check his post about copyrights, too. Trust me, everyone can learn from his post about it.

The Sports Muffin: This is another blog site I discovered on Yard Barker. This site's coverage of sports is very good, and it's most recent post covers NASCAR. This guy also packs quite the sense of humor which is more of a reason to check that site out!

Fantasy Football Goat: This blog is all about football. The commentary is impressive and their latest covers the five picks for comeback player of the year. If you want an early jump on football before the fantasy football season really gets cranking, then it's wise to reference this site.

NFL Minute: NFL Minute is a site run by a friend of mine I've known for almost three years after meeting on Sporting News. This is an NFL site that covers the league from teams and players to fantasy news. He hasn't updated it in awhile, but he's sure to get things cranking soon again with the season coming up. He's one of the brightest football fans out there!

Mo's Marketplace: This is the site of my friend Mo Morrissey. He loves to talk about the Boston area sports scenes, but his site covers more than that. He talks about political and personal issues, too. So if you want to see a site that's more than about sports, then this place is for you.

Reel To Field: This is fragnoli's site, a friend of mine I've known for two years via Sporting News. He also has a playlist of songs on his site which you can listen to while reading his entries. This guy is one of the most creative and knowledgeable people around, and his site should be checked out.

Lester's Legends: Lester is yet another friend of mine I met on SN, and he's one of the best you'll find around the internet as far as updating his site. He provides daily fantasy baseball players of the day, baseball Hall of Fame chronicles, and weekly Friday tidbits. He covers fantasy games in other sports as well. You'll have a hard time finding a more up to date fantasy site that's this accurate on the internet. Check it out.

Fantasy College Football Team Rankings: Pac-10 Defenses

Now we finally get to finish up the Pac-10 rankings with the defenses.

Pac-10 Team Defensive Rankings:
1. USC(Starters returning: 7)
The team is losing Sedrick Ellis at nosetackle, but they have depth and talent taking over. Fili Moala returns at defensive tackle while Christian Tupou will likely to start at the nose. Rey Maualuga leads the linebacking corps, and he's got a real shot at being named All-American. Brian Cushing, a former Rose Bowl MVP, also is back. The secondary returns three starters led by 2007 All-American free safety Taylor Mays.

2. Arizona State(Starters returning: 7)
Defensive ends Luis Vasquez and Dexter Davis return to form a solid duo. David Smith returns at defensive tackle, but new starter Jonathan English will have to prove to be an every down player. Travis Goethel and Morris Wooten return at linebacker, and Ryan McFoy is converting to outside linebacker from safety. Cornerback Omar Bolden and safety Troy Nolan return in the secondary.

3. Oregon(Starters returning: 7)
The secondary should be solid with rover Patrick Chung and cornerbacks Jarius Bryd and Walter Thurmond III returning. Linebackers Jerome Boyd and John Bacon return, but Bacon could be pushed to backing up by Casey Matthews. The defensive line has depth issues especially defensive tackle. However, ends Nick Reed and Will Tukuafu are back as a good tandem.

4. Stanford(Starters returning: 8 )
The strong Cardinal defense is led by a great group of linebackers in Clinton Snyder, Chike Amajoyi, and Pat Maynor. Ekom Udofia is back starting at nosetackle after an injury-plagued 2007 season. The defensive line returns ends Pannel Egboh and Erik Lorig. The secondary returns three starters and are led by a pair of solid safeties in Bo McNally and Austin Yancy.

5. California(Starters returning: 8 )
The defensive line returns three starters, but Derrick Hill will take over at one defensive tackle spot replacing Mika Kane. Rulon Davis and Tyson Alualu will start at the defensive end spots. Zack Follett, Worrell Williams, and Anthony Felder are all returning at the linebacker spots and the depth behind them could mean they play more 3-4 schemes. The secondary returns two starters led corner Syd'Quan Thompson and safety Bernard Hicks.

6. UCLA(Starters returning: 4)
Brigham Harwell and Brian Price form a solid duo of defensive tackles. Ends Korey Bosworth and Tom Blake will have to find some way to pressure quarterbacks this season, and that's been a strength for the team in recent years. Hard-hitting Reggie Carter returns to play middle linebacker and Kyle Bosworth will play the strongside spot. The secondary returns one starter in corner Alterraun Verner.

7. Oregon State(Starters returning: 3)
Ends Victor Butler and Slade Norris were great as third down specialists a year ago, and will play more this year with the Beavers rotating lineman throughout games. The entire linebacking corps is new, but they've had a good amount of playing time. Three starters return in what should be a solid secondary with corners Keenan Davis and Brandon Hughes along with safety Al Afalava coming back.

8. Arizona(Starters returning: 3)
The defense will miss All-American corner Antoine Cason, and freshman Robert Golden will replace him. The entire defensive line has new starters and only defensive tackle Donald Horton has started in any collegiate games. Ronnie Palmer returns at middle linebacker, but Adrian McCovy may be the best linebacker on the team. Safeties Cam Nelson and Nate Hess are back in the secondary.

9. Washington State(Starters returning: 8 )
The Cougars have plenty of experience returning, but were not very strong on that side of the ball last year. The defensive line returns tackle A'i Ahmu and end Andy Mattingly, but depth is a concern up front. All three linebackers return in Cory Evans, Greg Trent, and Kendrick Dunn, but depth behind them is a problem. Alfonso returns at corner as does safety Chima Nwachukwu.

10. Washington(Starters returning: 6)
Three starters return in the secondary, but two will likely be replaced at the start of the season. Mesphin Forrester will return at his corner spot. End Daniel Te'o-Neshiem is the only returning starter on the defensive line. E.J. Savannah and Trenton Tuiasosopo return at linebacker. The defense was one of the worst in the nation a year ago ranking 103rd overall in yards per game allowed.

Stud defenses: USC, Arizona State
Rising defense: Stanford
Falling defense: UCLA

Overall analysis: This is still a strong offensive conference, and USC and Arizona State are the defensive units that has the least amount of concern. Oregon, Stanford, and California have concerns along the defensive line, and could be very good should those units play above expectations. UCLA will have to find a way to pressure quarterbacks while Oregon State has good pass-rushers, but they've only been situational players. Arizona has too much inexperience in the front seven to be counted upon this year. Washington State and Washington had trouble stopping anyone in a loaded offensive conference, and it's probably best to avoid them unless they prove otherwise.

Fantasy College Football Team Rankings: Pac-10 Offenses

Now we move onto the Pac-10 starting with the team offenses.

Pac-10 Team Offensive Rankings:
1. USC(Starters returning: 4)
They may only return four starters, but don't let that fool you. Quarterback Mark Sanchez beat out former prized recruit Mitch Mustain for the starting job, and he'll have receivers Vidal Hazelton and Partick Turner to throw to with depth behind them. Stafon Johnson and Joe McKnight lead a solid and deep group of running backs. Jeff Byers is the only returning lineman, but everyone else gained valuable experience because of injuries a year ago.

2. Arizona State(Starters returning: 6)
The Sun Devils may have the best skillset of players on offense in the Pac-10, but their offensive line play has to improve. Quarterback Rudy Carpenter, running back Keegan Herring, and receivers Michael Jones and Chris McGaha all return. They return two lineman, and must protect Carpenter better after allowing a mind-boggling 55 sacks as a team a year ago.

3. Arizona(Starters returning: 10)
Willie Tuitama returns at quarterback to lead a team that ranked 10th in the nation in passing yards per game a year ago. Mike Thomas, Terrell Turner, and Delashaun Dean are back as receivers with strong depth behind them. Nic Grigsby returns at running back, but someone will have to step up behind him because he's not an every-down back. The offensive line returns four starters.

4. Oregon(Starters returning: 5)
The team will miss quarterback Dennis Dixon and running back Jonathan Stewart, but they have capable players to replace them. Nate Costa is the dual-threat quarterback, but he tore knee ligaments when he started and Justin Roper took over. Jeremiah Johnson looked good in the spring at running back. Receiver Jaison Williams returns as does three offensive lineman.

5. Washington(Starters returning: 6)
Jake Locker is a star in the making at quarterback, and he has three returning lineman up front to protect him. Brandon Johnson and Johri Fogerson look to replace the departed Louis Rankin at running back. The receiving corps is inexperienced, but the talent is there with D'Andre Goodwin and Chris Polk likely to start. Watch for freshmen Anthony Boyles and Devin Aquilar to see the field plenty of times at receiver, too.

6. Oregon State(Starters returning: 7)
Lyle Moevao, who went 4-0 as starting quarterback a year ago, returns as does three offensive lineman. Ryan McCants is a highly touted running back, but hasn't carried the ball in college yet. The receiving corps gets a boost after Sammie Stroughter was awarded an extra year of eligibility. Darrell Catchings and James Rodgers will be the other receivers, and Howard Croom returns to play tight end.

7. Washington State(Starters returning: 6)
Gary Rogers will start at quarterback and he'll have star receiver Brandon Gibson to throw to. Running back Dwight Tardy is coming off a torn ACL, so speedster Chris Ivory could see more carries this year. Jeshua Anderson and Michael Willis will join Gibson at the other receiver spots. The experienced offensive line returns four starters, but the offense will have to adjust very quickly to the new spread look that is installed.

8. California(Starters returning: 4)
Quarterback Nate Longshore will have his hands full holding off Kevin Riley, who was great in last year's Armed Forces Bowl. The offensive line is experienced with three starters returning, but the rest of the offense has question marks. Jahvid Best will start at running back despite being hampered with injuries in the spring. DeSean Jackson will be missed at receiver, and Michael Calvin is likely their top threat for the coming season.

9. UCLA(Starters returning: 4)
Quarterback Ben Olsen will start after Patrick Cowen tore an ACL in the spring. Raymond Carter and Kahlil Bell are the leading candidates at running back, but both are coming off injuries so freshman Aundre Dean may see action. Marcus Everett leads the receiving corps and Dominique Johnson will be the other starter. The offensive line returns two starters, and depth is a concern up front.

10. Stanford(Starters returning: 7)
Tavita Pritchard returns at quarterback with an experienced offensive line that returns three starters. Anthony Kimble is returning at running back and depth is good behind with Tyrone McGraw likely to see his share of carries. The receiving corps is a concern because of experience, but Richard Sherman and Doug Baldwin show potential as starters for the unit.

Stud offenses: USC, Arizona State
Rising offense: Washington
Falling offense: California

Overall analysis: This conference is loaded with plenty of offensive talent. USC and Arizona State should be great starts every week, and Arizona has the experience and talent to be good provided they get consistency in the running game. Oregon and Washington have plenty of talent to be a strong option all season. California and Washington State have question marks with running backs returning from injuries, and Oregon State is inexperienced at running back, too. UCLA and Stanford have enough experience at quarterback, but too many other questions marks loom for them as the season comes along.

Fantasy College Football Team Rankings: Big Ten Defenses

Today, we finish up with Big Ten by ranking the defenses. Enjoy.

Big Ten Team Defensive Rankings:
1. Ohio State(Starters returning: 9)
The loaded Buckeyes return three defensive lineman, two linebackers, and the entire starting secondary a from a year ago. The defense is led by last year's Butkus Award Winner and middle linebacker James Laurinaitis. Marcus Freeman, who was second on the team in tackles last year, returns at his outside linebacker spot. The stellar secondary is led by cornerback Malcolm Jenkins.

2. Penn State(Starters returning: 9)
The front seven will be the strength of the defense, but depth is a concern in the secondary. The defensive line returns all four starters led by end Maurice Evans. Linebacker Sean Lee is out for the year because of injury and Dan Connor is gone to the NFL. Tyrell Sales does return at outside linebacker and there's depth, too. The secondary returns four starters, but should injuries occur, it could be a big problem for them this year in a offensive conference like the Big Ten.

3. Illinois(Starters returning: 6)
The Fighting Illini return three defensive starting lineman from a year ago led by end Will Davis, who was the team's leader in sacks a year ago with 9.5. Derek Walker is the other end, and there's plenty of depth behind them. Brit Miller moves to middle linebacker from the outside spot. Vontae Davis, Dere Hicks, and Miami Thomas form a solid group of cornerbacks on defense.

4. Michigan(Starters returning: 8)
This is the strength of the Wolverines defense this year. The entire defensive line returns with big nosetackle Terrance Taylor leading the way. Obi Ezeh is the only returning linebacker and John Thompson is solid there, too. Morgan Trent and Donovan Warren return at the cornerback spots, but they will be leaned on to force more turnovers than they did a year ago.

5. Wisconsin(Starters returning: 9)
The Badgers return plenty of experience, but injuries in spring practices have caused five starters to be sidelined. Defensive tackles Jason Chapman and Mike Newkirk were two of those guys, and the others behind them have gained some experience. The team's best corner, Allen Langford, was also hurt during the spring. The backups are getting much needed reps, but the defense needs the starters to return to form before their opener on August 30.

6. Iowa(Starters returning: 5)
The two starting defensive tackles Mitch King and Matt Kroul are back. The defensive end spots will see two inexperienced players, likely Adrian Clayborn and Christian Ballard, starting on each side. A.J. Edds is the only returning linebacker and he started all their games a season ago. The secondary returns both safeties in Harold Dalton and Brett Greenwood, but the corners will see new faces starting this year.

7. Indiana(Starters returning: 7)
The defensive line recorded 42 sacks last year, and return three of those starters. End Greg Middleton led the nation in sacks with 16 a year ago. Jammie Kirlew will start at the other end. Will Patterson and Geno Johnson return at the outside linebacker spots. Austin Thomas and Nick Polk return at both safety spots, but they lost both starting cornerbacks from a year ago.

8. Purdue(Starters returning: 6)
Alex Magee and Ryan Barker return at the defensive tackle spots, and they have depth behind them. Keyon Brown returns at one end spot and the other end could see redshirt freshman Nickcaro Golding, a very quick pass-rusher on the other side. Anthony Heygood is the only returning linebacker. David Pender returns at cornerback and Brandon King is back at free safety.

9. Michigan State(Starters returning: 5)
Experience may be an issue on defense, but talent is another story. Defensive tackle Justin Kershaw is the only returning lineman, but Antonio Jeremiah shows very good promise as does end Trevor Anderson. Eric Gordon returns at outside linebacker and Greg Jones has moved from the outside to middle linebacker. Strong safety Otis Wiley is a solid strong safety who returns to lead the secondary.

10. Northwestern(Starters returning: 7)
The entire defensive line returns led by tackle John Gill, but they struggled getting pressure on the quarterback with only 18 sacks a year ago. Prince Kwateng returns at outside linebacker and new starter Malcolm Arrington moves to the middle from the outside. Brad Phillips returns at free safety and corner Sherrick McManis is also back. The defense has experience, but they still need to improve after giving up over 31 points a game last year.

11. Minnesota(Starters returning: 6)
The defense was the worst in the nation a year ago in terms of yardage allowed, so there's plenty to improve upon. The defensive line returns three starters, and they're counting on Willie VanDeSteeg to provide pressure at defensive end. Steve Davis and Deon Hightower return in the linebacking corps. Ryan Collado is the only experiened player in the secondary returning, but the whole unit could see all new starters by the start of the season.

Stud defenses: Ohio State
Rising defense: Michigan
Falling defense: Iowa

Overall analysis: Ohio State is clearly the top defensive unit in this conference after a standout performance on that side of the ball a year ago and nearly everyone back. Penn State has plenty of experience returning, but will miss their two players from last year. Illinois should be good on defense, and they have a very formidable front that will carry them on that side of the ball. Wisconsin is hurting and will have to be watched carefully at this time to see how they play with the current situation they have. Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, and Michigan State show promise, but question marks in each unit so you should pay close attention to their schedule in a conference that appears to be plenty good offensively. Northwestern has experience returning, but with the numbers they gave up last year, it's probably best to avoid them right now. The Golden Gophers were too bad on defense a year ago to improve to a point where you'd consider taking them at all during the season.

Fantasy College Football Team Rankings: Big Ten Offenses

We now move onto the Big Ten Conference starting with the offenses.

Big Ten Team Offensive Rankings:
1. Ohio State(Starters returning: 9)
Plenty of experience returns led by quarterback Todd Boeckman and running back Beanie Wells. Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline return at wide receiver, but depth behind them could be a problem. Four starters return on the offensive line with only the right tackle position seeing a new starter. They do have a tougher road schedule than last year though.

2. Illinois(Starters returning: 6)
Juice Williams returns at quarterback, but running back Rashard Mendenhall is gone. Daniel Dufrene will replace Mendenhall, and he does have talent. Arrelious Benn is the top receiver returning, and Chris James and converted tight end Jeff Cumberland joins him. The offensive line returns three starters, led by tackle Xavier Fulton and center Ryan McDonald.

3. Purdue(Starters returning: 6)
The biggest key to the Boilermakers offense is quarterback Curtis Painter returning with his top target Greg Orton at receiver. Aaron Valentin and Arsenio Curry will try to take away coverage on Orton by becoming playmakers themselves. Jaycen Taylor and Kory Sheets will share carries at running back. Three starters on the offensive line return, but the team will have to play better against the best in the Big Ten.

4. Northwestern(Starters returning: 7)
The Wildcats have C.J. Bacher returning at quarterback and his three receivers from a year ago led by Eric Peterman. Andrew Brewer provides another weapon at wide receiver as well as depth. Tyrell Sutton will start at running back and Omar Conteh will get some carries, too. The offensive line returns only two starters, so that is the biggest area of concern for them.

5. Wisconsin(Starters returning: 9)
The Badgers return their entire offensive line as well as running back P.J. Hill. Zach Brown and Lance Smith will back him up. Allan Evridge will likely be the new starting quarterback with Dustin Sherer backing him up. Travis Beckum and Garrett Graham form a great 1-2 tandem at tight end. The receiving corps is another area of concern with only Kyle Jefferson who has any experience starting.

6. Michigan State(Starters returning: 6)
Javon Ringer is returning at running back, and he's averaged more than six yards a carry in his career. Brian Hoyer is also returning at quarterback, but he'll miss throwing to Devin Thomas who is gone to the NFL. Mark Dell and Deon Curry are expected to be reliable targets at receiver for the Spartans. The offensive line returns three starters, and should help keep the offense balanced.

7. Indiana(Starters returning: 6)
Kellen Lewis is expected to return as starting quarterback even after his suspension in the spring. All-American receiver James Hardy is gone, but Andrew Means and Ray Fisher are back. Marcus Thigpen returns as the starting running back, and Bryan Payton provides depth at that position. The offensive line returns two starters, and both are on the left side of the line.

8. Iowa(Starters returning: 7)
Jake Christensen returns at quarterback as does his top receiver from a year ago, Derrell Johnson-Koulianos. Trey Stross and Andy Brodell will be the other starters. Brandon Myers returns at tight end and Tony Moeaki will see some time there, too. The offensive line was a big problem area last year after allowing 46 sacks a year ago. They return four starters on that line.

9. Penn State(Starters returning: 8 )
The entire backfield will be new with either Daryll Clark or Pat Devlin at quarterback and Evan Royster at running back. Derrick Williams and Deon Butler return to lead the receiving corps. Tight end Andrew Quarless returns, but Mickey Shuler will likely start over him. Four starters on the offensive line return which includes two centers, A.Q. Shipley and Mike Lucian.

10. Minnesota(Starters returning: 9)
The Golden Gophers are in the second year in the spread offense and quarterback Adam Weber returns to run it. Eric Decker and Tray Herndon are the returning starters at wide receiver. Duane Bennett will start at running back, but depth behind him is a big question mark because they need to run the ball to keep the worst ranked defense in the nation a year ago off the field as much as possible.

11. Michigan(Starters returning: 2)
Only tackle Stephen Schilling and fullback Mark Moundros return from last year's starting offense. Steven Street will likely start at quarterback and Nick Sheridan will back him up. Brandon Minor and Carlos Brown will have to replace the departed Mike Hart at running back. Greg Mathews and Junior Hemingway look to start at receiver in Rich Rodriguez's spread attack that will take some getting used to.

Stud offenses: Ohio State, Illinois
Rising offense: Michigan State
Falling offense: Michigan

Overall analysis: This is a conference that is loaded with offensive talent that should see a number of points being put up, although inconsistency will be a problem for some. Ohio State has enough experience and weapons to be the top offense, while Illinois should be good with Juice Williams even though Rashard Mendenhall is gone. The other experienced offenses should be good starts in favorable matchups, but they are to be watched before you start them in tough ones. There is plenty of experience at quarterback in this league, so that gives these teams a fighting chance to put up respectable offensive numbers in 2008.

Fantasy College Football Team Rankings: Big East Defenses

Today, we continue on by ranking the Big East defenses.

Big East Team Defensive Rankings:
1. Pittsburgh(Starters returning: 7)
The Panthers ranked 5th in total YPG a year ago and they have one of the best and deepest defensive lines in college led by defensive tackle Mick Williams and defensive end Greg Romeus. All three linebackers return which includes hard-hitting leader Scott McKillop in the middle. Aaron Berry returns at corner and Eric Thatcher is back at free safety for a team that was third in the nation in pass defense last year.

2. Rutgers(Starters returning: 8)
This unit ranked 17th in the nation in total YPG a year ago, and eight of them return. Jamaal Westerman returns to lead a deep group of defensive ends and George Johnson starts on the other side. Pete Tverdov returns at defensive tackle where true freshman Scott Vallone joins him in the middle. Linebackers Kevin Malast and Damaso Munoz are back as is leading tackler Courtney Greene at safety.

3. South Florida(Starters returning: 7)
Three defensive lineman return which includes All-American defensive end George Selvie, who recorded 14.5 sacks a year ago. Tyrone McKenzie returns at middle linebacker, and was the team's leader in tackles last year. Nate Allen and Carlton Williams form a solid safety tandem, but Tyller Roberts and Jerome Murphy are inexperienced, yet talented corners.

4. Connecticut(Starters returning: 8)
This was a strong unit for the Huskies a year ago, and return three defensive lineman led by ends Cody Brown and Julius Williams. The linebacking corps sees Scott Lutrus moving from the outside to inside while Dahna Deleston is moving from safety to outside linebacker. Darius Butler will start for the fourth consecutive year at corner and Robert Vaughn returns to play free safety.

5. West Virginia(Starters returning: 4)
Middle linebacker Reed Williams, the team's leading tackler from 2007, is back as is the second leading tackler Mortty Ivy at outside linebacker. The Mountaineers play a 3-3-5 defense and defensive tackle Scooter Berry is the only returning lineman. The secondary is big, but inexperienced where Quinton Andrews is the only returning startet from a year ago.

6. Cincinnati(Starters returning: 6)
Terrill Byrd, a second team All-American defensive tackle, returns along with Adam Hoppel on the inside. Former tight end Connor Barwin is moving to defensive end and the Bearcats are hoping he can be productive at his new position. Linebackers Ryan Manalac and Corey Smith return as does corners Mike Mickens and DeAngelo Smith. The defensive line and linebacking units are a little thin on depth.

7. Louisville(Starters returning: 4)
Defensive tackle Earl Heyman returns and tackle Adrian Grady is coming off a year in which he tore his pectoral muscle. The entire linebacking corps will be new, but the team has high hopes for outside linebacker Chris Campa. Free safety Bobby Buchanan is back as is corner Woodny Turenne, but he played poorly at times a year ago in pass coverage.

8. Syracuse(Starters returning: 4)
The Orange do return two starting defensive lineman in end Brandon Gilbeaux and tackle Arthur Jones on a team that ranked 111th in defense last season. Bud Tribbey is also a force at tackle, too. Jake Flaherty returns at middle linebacker, but the outside spots have no experience. Cornerback Mike Holmes is the only returning starter in the secondary.

Stud defenses: Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Florida, Connecticut
Rising defense: Connecticut
Falling defense: West Virginia

Overall analysis: This has been a conference known for high-powered offenses in recent years, but they feature great options on the defensive side of the ball these days. Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Florida, and Connecticut have enough experience and talent to be consistent options every week. West Virginia has talent on defense, but there's not much experience for this team to start the year. If Cincinnati stays healthy and gets good production on the defensive line, they can be a good option. Louisville and Syracuse have too little experience and not enough talent at this time to overcome that to be options during the season.
