What If? Sporting News & Yahoo! Fantasy Football Edition!

Okay, I'm gonna start a periodical series of fantasy football flashbacks. In these series, I'm going to pick out a player and season for him to see what his point total would be in today's version of the Sporting News basic fantasy game as well as the Yahoo! game. To peak the interest of football fans, I'm going to start with players before 1990 because fantasy football wasn't as prominent then. And since I'm a Chicago Bears and big-time Walter Payton fan, I'm going to start off by flashing back to his 1977 MVP season in the NFL.

Here's the point scale for SN(default configuration):
60 points for every touchdown
2 points for every rushing, receiving, and punt return yard gained
1 point for every kickoff return yard gained
2 points for every reception
1 point for every passing yard
-10 points for every kickoff return attempt
-45 points for lost fumble and interception
-1 point for incomplete pass

Here's the point scale for Yahoo!(default configuration):
6 points for every rushing, receiving, and return touchdown
4 points for passing touchdown
1 point for every 10 rushing and receiving yards
1 point for every 25 passing yards
2 points for every two-point conversion
-1 point for every interception
-2 points for every fumble
No points are given for receptions or return yardage in the default configuration.

Here are the stats and points in the SN game for Payton in 1977:
Rushing yards: 1852 = 3704 points
Rushing touchdowns: 14 = 840 points
Receptions: 27 = 54 points

Kickoff returns: 2 = -20 points

According to pro-footballreference.com, Payton lost six fumbles so that's what I based that off. His 275-yard performance against Minnesota in late November was the highlight of that year - a then-single game rushing yards record. He was named MVP for that season, and the Bears made the playoffs for the first time since 1963 that year with a 9-5 mark.

If you want to see a past favorite player of yours on here, you can suggest it. However, I'm gonna ask that you only pick one season for that player, and that it's before 1990. I will do these every so often on here, too. Thanks for viewing, and be sure to check the links to the top left corner of the page!

Very cool idea. You should do Barry Sanders' college season. That would blow people's midns.
